A violent altercation occurred at the Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, on Wednesday afternoon when a group of 40 to 50 Kanwar pilgrims reportedly broke through security barricades in the Nandi Hall and tried to enter the inner sanctum without permission. This incident resulted in injuries to six security personnel who were present for crowd management.

During their attempt to force entry, the group allegedly displaced donation boxes and confronted the security staff. As the personnel endeavoured to manage the situation and prevent the intrusion, some pilgrims responded aggressively, leading to a physical confrontation.

The clash quickly escalated, prompting chaos within the temple premises. The security staff subsequently reported the situation to local authorities, who intervened to restore order and remove the individuals causing the disruption.

CCTV Footage Captures Disturbance

CCTV footage from the temple has provided insights into the events that transpired. The recordings reveal devotees making attempts to enter the sanctum, moving donation boxes in the process and engaging in heated arguments with security personnel. The video evidence also documents the scuffle and the aggressive actions taken against one of the security guards.

Further recordings show the aftermath of the incident, highlighting the injuries sustained by the security staff, as well as their subsequent transport to a medical facility for treatment. Reports suggest that two of the injured employees sustained serious injuries that required immediate medical attention.

Following the conflict, police and additional security personnel were deployed to manage the situation effectively and ensure the safety of other devotees present at the temple.

Temple Management Responds to Incident

The Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple Management Committee has expressed serious concern regarding the incident and announced that measures are underway to identify those involved. The committee has stated its intent to pursue strict legal action against the individuals according to the law and temple regulations.

In an official statement, the temple committee emphasised that actions such as breaching security, damaging property, assaulting security personnel, and disregarding established darshan protocols would not be tolerated under any circumstances. They highlighted the importance of preserving the sanctity and security of the temple environment.

This event comes during a particularly busy period for the temple, as the month of Sawan attracts hundreds of thousands of devotees. Temple authorities noted that the actions of the group not only disrupted security arrangements but also posed a significant risk to the safety of other visitors. The committee reiterated that no justification for religious expression can excuse violations of security measures or temple rules.
