Chhattisgarh Police Implement Drone Surveillance to Combat Illegal Opium Farming

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Chhattisgarh police have escalated their efforts to tackle illegal narcotics cultivation following the identification of opium farming in Naveen Ghat village. Drones are now being utilized to oversee remote regions and pinpoint unlawful plantations, as part of the authorities’ objective to maintain a drug-free environment in the district.

Discovery of Opium Farms in Naveen Ghat

On March 24, police officials reported the discovery of opium plants on the properties of three individuals: Sadhu Ram Nagvanshi, Jagat Ram Nagvanshi, and Abhimanyu Nag. This revelation was made after police received intelligence regarding opium cultivation in the vicinity of the Lalunga police station. Authorities are currently in the process of verifying land ownership and assessing the involvement of the individuals in question. Depending on the gathered evidence, legal action may be initiated under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, which could lead to arrests.

Enhanced Vigilance and Community Involvement

In light of these developments, police have ramped up their vigilance in the area and initiated drone surveillance operations. The authorities are also encouraging local residents to report suspicious activities associated with drug cultivation. This proactive approach aims to eliminate illegal narcotics operations throughout the district, thereby contributing to community safety.

Previous Incidents of Narcotics Eradication

In related activities earlier this month, officials from the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) reported the dismantling of around 170 acres of unlawful opium cultivation in the remote tribal regions of Samoli, Khuna, and Pipli in Kotda Tehsil, Udaipur district. The operation involved collaboration among the NCB, the Rajasthan Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), and local police forces. The estimated value of the destroyed opium was reported to exceed Rs 275 crore. Subsequent surveillance operations are currently being conducted by the NCB and the ANTF to apprehend individuals involved in these illegal activities.

Additional Drug Trafficking Incidents

In another instance, Bathinda Police apprehended two drug traffickers in February, seizing 6.5 kilograms of opium that had been smuggled from Rajasthan. The investigation revealed that the traffickers had sourced the opium from Rajasthan to supply various districts, including Bathinda. SP City Narinder Singh confirmed that Jagsir Singh Seera, one of the suspects, has six prior cases registered under the NDPS Act and is currently serving a ten-year sentence for two of the commercial charges. He was released on bail in September 2024, after which he returned to drug trafficking activities.
