Chef Vikas Khanna hosted NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani for Iftar in New York

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a poignant Iftar gathering held at his Manhattan restaurant, Bungalow, celebrated chef Vikas Khanna welcomed New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The event marked an unexpected reunion that unlocked memories spanning over two decades, stirring nostalgia for both men.

Khanna took to social media to share their unique connection, illuminating how their paths first crossed when Mamdani was merely eight years old, accompanying his mother, renowned filmmaker Mira Nair.

Recollections of Early Challenges

Khanna recounted the backdrop of their initial encounter, which unfolded during a challenging phase in his life. Freshly settled in New York, he had recently navigated homelessness and transitioned from an abusive job to working at Salaam Bombay, a restaurant located in Tribeca. The name Salaam Bombay held special significance for him, as it was also the title of Nair’s celebrated film. This nostalgic connection was further enriched when Nair and her young son, Zohran, entered the restaurant one day. Khanna vividly recalled, “One day, Mira walked in with her very young 8-year-old son, Zohran.”

The Significance of the Iftar Gathering

Fast forward to present day, the young boy who once visited the restaurant returned as the mayor of New York City. Mamdani attended the Iftar event and participated in the traditional ritual of breaking his fast by consuming a date before settling down for a meal curated by Khanna. The gathering took on a significant emotional resonance for Khanna, as he reflected on the encouragement he had received from Nair during those formative years in the city.

Honoring Connections and Memories

Throughout his time in New York, Khanna acknowledged Nair as one of the earliest supporters of his culinary journey. Their mutual respect has led Khanna to cater various events for her, reinforcing the deep-rooted acknowledgment of their shared past. He expressed that cooking for Mamdani again after so many years held profound meaning for him, capturing the essence of life coming full circle.

Khanna’s Personal Note to Mamdani

In his social media post, Khanna articulated, “And today, 25+ years later, I had the honour of cooking for that same young boy — now a global leader shaping the future of New York City.” He conveyed sincere gratitude to Mamdani, stating, “Thank you, Zohran Mamdani, for celebrating Iftar with us today. Cooking for you was deeply personal 25 years ago, and it feels even more meaningful today.” The post drew significant attention, accumulating over 2.1 million views and receiving a warm response from the public.
