Changes Announced in Delhi Nursery Admissions for 2026-27 Academic Year

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Education Department of Delhi has released a new circular outlining the admission procedure for Nursery, KG, and Class 1 for the academic year 2026-27. The application process is set to commence on March 2, 2026, marking a departure from the previous schedule. Parents will have the opportunity to collect application forms from schools between March 2 and March 16, 2026. Completed forms must be submitted in designated drop boxes during specified hours: from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM and from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. It is important to note that only children residing within Delhi are eligible for admission.

Selection Timeline and Distance Criteria

The list of applicants, which will include information regarding any errors, is scheduled for display on March 18, 2026. A lottery system will be employed for selection, taking place on March 20, 2026. The list of selected candidates will be published three days later, on March 23, 2026. The admission period for successful applicants will span from March 24 to April 2, 2026. In the event of any remaining vacancies, waitlist admissions will occur from April 4 to April 7, 2026. The updated circular establishes a clear priority based on the distance of applicants’ residences from the school, specifically within a 1 km and 3 km radius. For applicants living beyond a 3 km distance, parents must provide a parental affidavit affirming safe transportation arrangements.

Age Requirements and Necessary Documentation

The age criteria for applicants remain the same as in previous years. As of March 31, 2026, children must meet the following age requirements: Nursery applicants should be between 3 to 4 years old, KG applicants between 4 to 5 years old, and Class 1 applicants between 5 to 6 years old. Required documents for submission include a birth certificate, a residence certificate, a recent photograph, and a reservation certificate for applicable categories. Additionally, children belonging to disabled or disadvantaged groups may gain temporary admission for up to 30 days, even if they lack complete documentation at the time of the admission process. Selected candidates must also present a vaccination certificate within six months following their admission.

Critical Dates for Admission Process

Key dates for the 2026-27 admission process have been outlined as follows: Application forms will be available from March 2 to March 16, 2026; the list of applicants will be posted on March 18, 2026; the draw of lots is scheduled for March 20, 2026; the selected list will be revealed on March 23, 2026; the admission phase will take place from March 24 to April 2, 2026; and waitlist admissions will run from April 4 to April 7, 2026.

Differences from Previous Admission Circular

The newly issued circular presents several changes from the previous guidelines. Previously, the admission process began in December with initial lists released in January and relied on a detailed point-based selection system. The new circular shifts the timeline to March and April, adopting a simplified selection process based on distance and a draw of lots for transparency. New requirements, such as the parental affidavit for distances greater than 3 km and the submission of vaccination certificates, have also been introduced. While the age criteria remain unchanged, the revised guidelines emphasize greater transparency and streamlined procedures in the admissions process.
