The CSR Journal Magazine

The wanted criminal, Akashdeep alias Akash, was shot during an encounter with police in Amritsar and subsequently arrested. Officials reported that the incident occurred when a police team intercepted him following intelligence about his movements. Police Commissioner Harmanbir Singh Gill confirmed that Akashdeep was involved in several serious criminal cases and was allegedly conspiring with associates to free a jailed criminal by attacking the police escorting him.

According to Commissioner Gill, Akashdeep hails from Qadian in the Batala police district and is wanted in seven criminal cases across various police stations. He had also been declared a proclaimed offender by the court. The accused was reportedly involved in a robbery of approximately Rs 2.5 lakh from a money exchanger’s shop in Batala, where he and his associates allegedly executed the crime at gunpoint.

Details of the alleged conspiracy revealed that Akashdeep and his associates were planning to facilitate the escape of a criminal named Angrez, who is currently incarcerated and faces over 15 serious criminal charges. These charges include cases related to the Bhola murder and the Kot Khalsa murder.

Police Response and Arrest

Commissioner Gill stated that the gang had allegedly devised a plan to attack the police escort team transporting Angrez, either during a court appearance or by creating an opportunity during a roadside halt. Reports indicated that the associates were considering stopping the police vehicle under the pretext of a birthday celebration or at a restaurant before launching an attack to assist the prisoner in escaping.

The police managed to thwart the alleged plan after receiving intelligence inputs and tracking the suspects through human intelligence and technical surveillance, including CCTV footage. Gill noted that police teams had been monitoring the movements and routes of the suspects before intercepting them.

Recovery of Arms and Ongoing Investigation

During the operation, law enforcement recovered a .30-bore pistol, two empty cartridges, three live cartridges, and a scooter from the scene. The scooter bore an Amritsar registration number, and police are investigating whether it was stolen or acquired through other means. Commissioner Gill further stated that four other members of the gang have been identified, and efforts are underway to apprehend them.

Police teams are conducting raids at multiple locations to trace the absconding suspects. Akashdeep is expected to be questioned further to establish the extent of the gang’s criminal activities, verify the alleged escape conspiracy, and ascertain the roles of other members involved. The investigation will also focus on the weapon and scooter recovered during the operation while efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects continue.

The police’s proactive measures and intelligence-led operations have been crucial in addressing the rising concerns surrounding gang-related activities in the region, as they continue to pursue all leads in this case.
