The landscape of admissions to Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) is evolving, offering students diverse routes aside from the traditional JEE Advanced. Notably, IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur are introducing innovative programmes that assess candidates through various means other than a singular entrance examination. Initiatives like the Bachelor of Cybersecurity (BCyber) programme signify a shift towards a broader evaluation of applicants based on their academic performances and practical skills.

As of the upcoming academic session of 2026-27, IIT Madras will collaborate with IIT Kanpur to launch the BCyber programme. This new offering does not rely on the JEE Advanced score and instead employs a different selection process focused on aptitude tests and practical challenges. The first admission cycle was successfully conducted, and the next one is anticipated to implement further changes, expanding the criteria for selecting candidates.

This evolving admission model aims to gauge students’ abilities in critical areas such as logical reasoning, basic mathematics, and cybersecurity aptitude through an aptitude test and a lengthy hackathon. The hackathon component will specifically measure each applicant’s programming skills and cybersecurity knowledge. This transformation seeks to assess a candidate’s proficiency in relevant skills rather than merely their capability to navigate a standardised test.

Alternative Admissions Through Olympiads

In addition to the BCyber initiative, IITs are actively considering Olympiad performances as a viable method for identifying promising students in science and mathematics. IIT Kanpur has recently inaugurated an admission route based on Olympiad achievements, allowing exceptional students to gain entry without a JEE Advanced score. In 2026, 14 students were admitted via this alternative pathway, joining a variety of programmes including Computer Science, Biological Sciences, and Data Science.

This approach builds on IIT Kanpur’s previous attempts to admit students through performance in national and international science competitions. It suggests a recognition that success in Olympiads may provide insights into a student’s depth of understanding and problem-solving skills that a traditional entrance exam may not adequately reflect.

The move towards admission based on Olympiad success underlines the increasing recognition of a broader set of talents beyond what is revealed through JEE Advanced scores. The selected students’ performance in these prestigious competitions underscores their suitability for rigorous academic pursuits at IIT institutions.

IIT Madras’ Non-Campus BS Programmes

IIT Madras has also initiated non-campus Bachelor of Science (BS) programmes, providing students further liberty to apply without entering through the JEE Advanced pathway. Programmes like BS in Data Science and Applications and BS in Electronic Systems allow students to gain admission through specific qualifiers designed by the institution itself. This initiative exemplifies an adaptive approach to admissions in the IIT ecosystem.

These non-campus BS programmes mark a significant departure from traditional residential Bachelor of Technology (BTech) routes, which primarily rely on JEE Advanced for entrance. This diversification in admission strategies showcases an increasing willingness among IITs to explore different metrics for assessing candidates, highlighting practical skills and specialised knowledge.

The progressive changes in admission procedures indicate that the ambition of attaining an IIT education can now be realised through multiple pathways. While JEE Advanced remains the most preferred route for conventional BTech programmes, young learners can now consider other avenues that evaluate merit and aptitude, broadening their chances of joining these esteemed institutions.
