Centre Launches Recruitment for Heads of SJVN and NTPC Green Energy

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Centre has launched the recruitment process for new leadership positions in two significant public sector organisations integral to India’s clean energy initiatives: SJVN Ltd and NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL). The Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB), responsible for executive appointments in the Indian public sector, has issued a call for applications for the roles of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of SJVN and Managing Director of NTPC Green Energy.

Widening Candidate Pool

This initiative marks a pivotal moment for both companies, which are increasingly central to India’s renewable energy goals. In a notable change, eligibility criteria now allow senior executives from the private sector to apply, thereby expanding the candidate pool. Candidates from private enterprises with a minimum annual revenue of ₹5,000 crore can submit their applications, with a likely preference for those from listed firms.

The advertisement announcing the CMD position at SJVN was published on June 13. Currently, this role is temporarily being filled by Bhupinder Gupta, the Chairman and Managing Director of NHPC. SJVN, classified as a Navratna enterprise, has made significant strides from being exclusively a hydropower producer to becoming a diversified energy company, with interests that include solar, wind, thermal generation, transmission, and power trading across India and Nepal.

Presently, SJVN boasts a project portfolio exceeding 21 gigawatts (GW) across 53 projects, along with more than 390 kilometres of transmission infrastructure. The company has over 4 GW of operational capacity, with an additional 4.1 GW under construction, reinforcing its expanded role within both the renewable and conventional energy sectors of the country.

NTPC Green Energy’s Leadership Vacancy

In parallel, the PESB has begun the search for a Managing Director for NTPC Green Energy Ltd, the renewable energy division of NTPC. This position has been unfilled since February 2026. NTPC Green Energy has rapidly ascended as one of India’s leading renewable energy developers, with an operational capacity of approximately 9.2 GW as of March 2026, coupled with nearly 14 GW in various stages of development.

The company’s portfolio consists of around 8.4 GW derived from solar energy projects and 0.8 GW from wind energy initiatives. In the financial year 2026, NTPC Green Energy successfully commissioned approximately 3.3 GW of renewable capacity, a testament to its project execution capabilities.

Furthermore, NTPC Green Energy is actively developing several large-scale renewable energy parks, including the flagship Khavda Ultra Mega Renewable Energy Power Park located in Gujarat and the Barethi Solar Park in Madhya Pradesh. These projects are anticipated to make significant contributions to India’s ambition of increasing non-fossil fuel-based power generation capacity across the nation.

Future Implications for Renewable Energy Sector

The appointments of new leadership figures at SJVN and NTPC Green Energy are being closely monitored by both the power and renewable energy sectors. Given their strategic importance, these organisations are expected to play critical roles in facilitating the rapid deployment of clean energy solutions in India and aiding the nation in achieving its long-term decarbonisation objectives.

This recruitment exercise is particularly vital as India aims to enhance its renewable energy capacity to meet ambitious targets and commitments. The outcome of these appointments will potentially influence the direction and pace of the country’s transition to sustainable energy sources.

As the search for qualified candidates progresses, stakeholders within the energy sector remain focused on finding individuals who can effectively lead these public enterprises into a future characterised by sustainable energy solutions.
