Celebrations in Nepal as Rastriya Swatantra Party Claims Two-Thirds Majority

The CSR Journal Magazine

Throughout Nepal, numerous supporters gathered in celebration as the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), led by Balendra Shah, also known as “Balen,” announced an anticipated two-thirds majority in the parliamentary elections. Following a day filled with counting activities, enthusiastic crowds sang and danced in the streets, demonstrating their excitement over the prospective political shift. At counting centers, supporters were seen celebrating with the party’s election symbol, ringing bells, and expressing their hopes for the future.

Insights from RSP Leadership

Dol Prasad Aryal, vice president of the RSP, spoke about the party’s expectations, articulating a goal of winning 186 seats in the new parliament. As he exited a counting venue on the outskirts of Kathmandu, Aryal affirmed their confidence, saying they project a total of 186 seats based on ongoing counts. The RSP’s ascent comes in the aftermath of a significant political upheaval following last September’s unrest, which led to the ousting of then-Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s government.

Context of the Elections

The parliamentary election, conducted after a hiatus of six months, saw a preliminary voter turnout of approximately 60 percent. Observers indicate that this election could signal a transformative period for Nepal’s political landscape, addressing longstanding concerns over corruption and governance. Aryal emphasized the party’s commitment to tackling corruption and ensuring that citizens feel a genuine connection to their government, highlighting the RSP’s agenda focused on development and effective service delivery.

Current Electoral Status

As counting continues for the contested 165 seats under the First-Past-the-Post system, the RSP is reportedly leading in more than 100 seats, with three victories confirmed by the evening of the election day. In contrast, the Nepali Congress trails with leadership in only 12 seats and has secured two victories. The Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist) led by former Prime Minister Oli remains without any confirmed wins, though it leads in 11 constituencies.

Ongoing Vote Counts

As the vote counts progress, KP Sharma Oli is falling behind Balendra Shah, with the latter maintaining a lead of over 13,000 votes. The margin between the two candidates stands just above 3,000 votes as the counting continues. Comprehensive results will encompass 165 directly elected seats along with 110 allocated via proportional representation. These final results are anticipated within the upcoming week, marking a significant moment for the nation.
