Canon Recognizes India as a Hub for R&D Innovation

The CSR Journal Magazine

Canon, a prominent name in the camera industry since 1937, has established itself globally with its extensive range of solutions. Notably, innovation at Canon extends beyond its advanced research and development laboratories into the dynamic environments of small-town copy shops and the lively Indian wedding circuit. Toshiaki Nomura, President and CEO of Canon India, reveals that India’s distinct demands and resourceful users have prompted Japanese engineers to travel to various Indian cities to observe their devices in action, gaining fresh insights and understanding of product utilization.

Evolution and Diversification of Canon’s Business

Canon’s history is nearing nine decades, characterized by significant evolution and diversification. Initially recognized for its cameras, the company has expanded its focus over time. Nomura reflects on the transformation, stating, “We started in the camera business back in 1937, so we have almost 90 years of history. Over time, we diversified.” Today, Canon’s primary business encompasses imaging and printing, now among its largest segments. Furthermore, the company plays an essential role in advanced industries, including medical diagnostics and semiconductor production, with Nomura citing medical imaging technologies like CT scans and X-rays as pivotal components of their business.

Support for India’s Semiconductor Industry

As India aims to establish itself as a key player in semiconductor manufacturing, Canon is strategically positioned to contribute by providing essential equipment for producing semiconductor chips. While Canon does not manufacture semiconductors, the company supplies the necessary machinery for their production. Additionally, Canon has made strides into the space sector by developing miniature satellites that leverage its expertise in optics and sensor technology.

Innovative Learning from Indian Use Cases

Canon has created a unique connection between Indian practical applications and Japanese engineering principles. Nomura describes this experience as an invaluable “eye-opener” for R&D teams, emphasizing that understanding how devices are utilized in India unexpectedly reveals innovative adaptations. Cases where Indian modifications led to successful product features globally highlight this cultural exchange, such as the adaptation of devices for local print media needs, which resulted in substantial sales growth after adjustments were made.

Addressing the Complex Indian Market

Managing operations in India presents challenges akin to overseeing multiple territories rather than a single nation. Nomura points out that the diversity across states enhances Canon’s business landscape, making it more dynamic. Notably, the wedding industry plays a significant role in the imaging sector, reportedly accounting for around 60 percent of Canon’s revenue in this domain. The emergence of OTT platforms and advancements in content creation further signify potential growth areas for Canon in India.

The Complementary Role of Smartphones

Amid discussions on the competitive landscape posed by smartphones, Nomura offers a different perspective, viewing them as complementary rather than adversarial. He asserts that smartphones can encourage people to explore photography, eventually prompting a desire for higher-quality imaging solutions, which Canon is prepared to offer.

Incorporating AI into Products

In the evolving tech landscape, Canon adopts a cautious yet meaningful approach to artificial intelligence. Rather than prominently branding products with AI, the company focuses on integrating the technology to enhance user experiences. AI applications within Canon’s devices include advanced tracking features in cameras and predictive maintenance functionalities in printers, ensuring optimal performance and reduced downtime.

Commitment to Customer Support

Canon’s philosophy centers around community and mutual benefit, as illustrated by its dedication to fulfilling the needs of Indian consumers. Nomura emphasizes the importance of customer support, recognizing that post-sale service is crucial for long-term relationships. With an extensive network of over 600 authorized service centers across India, Canon aims to ensure reliable access to support. This commitment enhances the bond between Canon and its Indian clientele while fostering an environment of continuous innovation and improvement.
