Canada has submitted a formal application to become part of the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), as announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office on Wednesday. This initiative aims to bolster the nation’s defence alignment with European allies while aiming to decrease dependence on the United States. The JEF is a rapid-response military coalition that currently includes ten NATO member states from northern Europe.

Britain has reportedly welcomed Canada’s bid to join the JEF. A statement from Carney’s office confirmed that the Prime Minister expressed gratitude for the UK’s support regarding Canada’s engagement in this significant initiative. Currently, Canada is a member of NATO but is seeking enhanced defence collaborations with European nations to diversify military partnerships beyond those established with Washington.

Discussions on Defence Cooperation Between Leaders

During a meeting in northern England, Prime Minister Carney and British Prime Minister Andy Burnham deliberated on opportunities for defence-industrial collaboration, especially through the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP). Canada joined the advanced fighter jet initiative as an observer in July 2026, indicating a growing interest in participating in joint military projects.

Additionally, the discussions included the opportunities and challenges associated with artificial intelligence. Both leaders noted the necessity for concerted efforts between governments and technology firms to address shared concerns and enhance online safety, according to information released by Downing Street.

Furthermore, they considered ways to strengthen defence collaboration, especially regarding the roles of the Multilateral Defence Mechanism alongside Canada-led Defence Security Resilience Bank (DSRB). This initiative aims to improve defence capabilities within the region.

Challenges and Opportunities in European Partnerships

The DSRB has encountered challenges in garnering support from some larger European nations. In previous statements, both Britain and Germany have distanced themselves from this initiative. Nevertheless, UK Finance Minister Rachel Reeves indicated to parliament in June that collaboration between Britain and Canada on the DSRB was becoming more significant.

Both leaders underscored the importance of cultivating stronger relationships with European partners, particularly in defence and trade sectors. As Canada looks to expand its defence ties, the emphasis on establishing cooperative frameworks is seen as essential for both nations in addressing contemporary security challenges.

Lastly, the Joint Expeditionary Force, which is designed to provide a nimble military partnership, comprises Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Canada’s application for membership reflects its strategic aim to broaden defence relationships and enhance military interactions with European entities.
