British F-35 Jet Makes Emergency Landing in Kerala After Fuel Warning

A British F-35B Lightning II fighter jet was forced to make an emergency landing at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport on Saturday night after experiencing low fuel levels during a sortie over the Indian Ocean. The jet, part of the UK’s HMS Prince of Wales Carrier Strike Group, landed safely around 9:30 PM, according to sources from the airport.

The pilot of the stealth fighter had contacted Indian aviation authorities, urgently requesting landing clearance due to a fuel emergency. Responding swiftly, airport officials declared an emergency to facilitate a smooth and safe landing. “The pilot reported low fuel and asked for permission to land. Everything was handled quickly and professionally,” a source told PTI.

F-35B Jet Diverts to Kerala Airport Amid Bad Weather Near Carrier

The 5th-generation F-35B, known for its short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL) capabilities, is designed to operate from aircraft carriers without catapult systems. While it usually recovers onto carriers like the HMS Prince of Wales, adverse weather conditions near the carrier may have prevented a safe return, prompting the emergency diversion to land-based infrastructure.

As of Sunday morning, the advanced fighter jet remains parked at the Thiruvananthapuram airport. The British authorities have requested clearance from the Indian central government to refuel the aircraft. Officials confirmed that the request is under review, and approval is awaited.

F 35B Seen as the Most Sophisticated Aircraft

The F-35B, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, is considered one of the most sophisticated combat aircraft in service today. Its stealth profile, electronic warfare capabilities, and advanced sensor fusion make it a cornerstone of modern Western airpower, employed by the UK, US, NATO, and allied forces globally.

This incident occurred shortly after the UK Carrier Strike Group’s joint naval exercises with the Indian Navy in the Indo-Pacific. The deployment of HMS Prince of Wales and its complement of F-35Bs in the region highlights growing defence cooperation between India and the United Kingdom.

Emergency Landings Rare but Not Unprecedented, Say Defence Experts

Although such mid-mission landings are rare, defence analysts noted that emergency landings under operational stress, especially involving long-range sorties over vast ocean spaces, are unusual but not without precedent.

Neither the UK Ministry of Defence nor Lockheed Martin has issued any formal statements regarding the details of the emergency as of now.
