‘Boong’ Wins Best Children’s Film at BAFTA 2026, Marking Milestone for Indian Cinema

The CSR Journal Magazine

India marked a notable accomplishment at the BAFTA 2026 awards, as the Manipuri-language film ‘Boong’ secured the Best Children’s & Family Film award. The film, supported by filmmaker Farhan Akhtar, outperformed international contenders including ‘Arco’, ‘Lilo & Stitch’, and ‘Zootropolis 2’.

Highlighting Regional Narratives

The victory is considered a landmark moment for Indian cinema, particularly for narratives originating from the Northeast region. This win emphasizes the increasing global recognition of regional stories that reflect local realities yet resonate with universal themes. Farhan Akhtar attended the award ceremony, accompanied by his wife, Shibani Dandekar.

Film’s Premise and Direction

‘Boong’ is directed by Lakshmipriya Devi and set in Manipur during a time of social and political unrest. The title translates to “little boy” in Manipuri. The story revolves around a young boy named Boong, portrayed by Gugun Kipgen, who believes that reuniting his fractured family will bring back joy to his mother, Mandakini, played by Bala Hijam. Driven by the desire to locate his missing father, Boong embarks on an adventurous journey alongside his best friend, Raju, played by Angom Sanamatum.

A Journey Across Borders

Their quest leads them to the border town of Moreh and crosses over into Myanmar, enriching the narrative with both emotional depth and geographical significance. Through the eyes of a child, ‘Boong’ explores themes of loss, hope, and resilience in turbulent times.

International Recognition Ahead of Release

Prior to its theatrical release slated for September 2025, ‘Boong’ garnered international acclaim on the festival circuit. It had its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024 and was subsequently featured at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, and the Warsaw International Film Festival, where it received favorable reviews from critics.
