BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari Accuses TMC of Insulting Communities during President Murmu’s Bengal Visit

The CSR Journal Magazine

In Malda, West Bengal, BJP MLA and Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, has leveled serious accusations against the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, asserting that it has insulted women, tribal communities, and the Constitution.

This statement comes in the wake of alleged protocol lapses during President Droupadi Murmu’s participation in the 9th International Santal Conference held in Darjeeling. Adhikari has called for punitive measures against senior officials, including the Chief Secretary, the Director General of Police (DGP), the Police Commissioner of Siliguri, and the District Magistrate of Darjeeling.

President Murmu’s Disappointment Over Arrangements

President Murmu voiced her dissatisfaction regarding the arrangements made for the conference, suggesting that the venue was not suitable as it was difficult for many members of the Santal community to attend due to its remote location in Gosaipur, Bagdogra. She expressed her belief that the event would have been better held at the original venue in Bidhannagar, Siliguri, which had the capacity to accommodate a larger audience. During her remarks, she stated that the administration’s decision-making process regarding the venue change left her confused and saddened by the low turnout.

Absence of State Leadership Raises Questions

During the event, President Murmu also highlighted the absence of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and other key ministers, noting that their presence would have been appropriate given the significance of her visit. She mentioned a personal connection to the state, referring to Banerjee as her younger sister and expressing concern that the Chief Minister’s absence might have been indicative of underlying issues. This sentiment points to the broader implications of protocol adherence in state matters and the importance of respect for constitutional authority.

Opposition Voices Criticism of State Government

Congress leader Hussain Dalwai echoed Adhikari’s criticisms, asserting that the state government fell short in properly welcoming the President. He emphasized that political differences should not interfere with the respect owed to the Head of State. Dalwai remarked that if Chief Minister Banerjee was unable to attend, a minister should have represented her, reinforcing the principle that the President’s visit should not be politicized.

Trinamool Congress Denies Allegations

In response to the charges leveled by the opposition, the ruling Trinamool Congress dismissed the claims of protocol violations, characterizing them as politically motivated attempts to discredit the state administration. The party’s leadership contended that the event was conducted appropriately under the circumstances, maintaining that the opposition’s narrative was unfounded.

Central Government Seeks Clarification on Protocol Issues

Amid the unfolding controversy, the Central government has sought an explanation from the West Bengal administration regarding the alleged lapses in protocol during President Murmu’s visit. Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan has requested a comprehensive report from the Chief Secretary by a specified deadline, outlining details about the venue change for the International Santal Conference, alterations in the planned route, and other logistical concerns that emerged during the visit.

Context of the Event and Future Implications

The response and outcomes of this controversy could carry significant implications for the political landscape in West Bengal, particularly regarding the interaction between state authorities and federal representatives. The events of the International Santal Conference highlight the necessity for effective communication and respect for established protocols in governmental functions.
