Rahul Gandhi Urges President to Reassess Dushyant Gautam’s Appointment as Sikkim Governor

The CSR Journal Magazine

Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has formally requested President Droupadi Murmu to reconsider the appointment of Dushyant Gautam as the Governor of Sikkim. This appeal comes amidst renewed calls for justice in the 2022 murder case of Ankita Bhandari, a 19-year-old who was killed under distressing circumstances. Gandhi’s letter highlights the unresolved identity of an alleged VIP linked to the case, which has not been clarified nearly four years after Bhandari’s death.

In his communication, Gandhi expressed concern over the slow progress of the investigation into the VIP connection, questioning the appropriateness of Gautam’s appointment while inquiries remain incomplete. He underscored the gravity of the situation by stating that Bhandari’s refusal to comply with a VIP’s demands ultimately led to her tragic demise.

Gandhi’s letter, shared on social media platform X, included a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle for justice faced by Bhandari’s family. He alleged that many believe Gautam may have ties to the case, although these claims remain unproven. He emphasised the potential complications that a Governor’s constitutional role could pose for any future legal proceedings related to the investigation.

Family of Ankita Bhandari Issues Ultimatum

Rahul Gandhi’s letter coincided with a protest held by Bhandari’s family at India Gate in New Delhi, where they expressed their discontent over Gautam’s appointment. During the protest, Delhi Police briefly detained Bhandari’s family and several opposition leaders. Virendra Singh Bhandari, Ankita’s father, issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the government, warning that if Gautam’s appointment was not revoked, widespread protests would erupt across the nation.

Bhandari’s father stated, “We are giving the government a 24-hour ultimatum. If it does not revoke Dushyant Gautam’s appointment, people across the country, in every state, will take to the streets to demand justice for Ankita Bhandari.” This statement underscores the family’s determination to seek accountability and justice for their daughter.

Ankita Bhandari was employed as a receptionist at the Vanantra resort near Rishikesh when she was murdered on September 18, 2022. The resort owner, Pulkit Arya, along with two of his employees, has been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for their roles in the crime. However, the alleged involvement of a VIP remains a significant point of contention for the family, and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is still pursuing this angle.

Political Implications and Ongoing Investigations

Gandhi’s appeal has placed additional scrutiny on the President’s response and the government’s stance regarding Gautam’s appointment. He referenced Article 74(1) of the Constitution, which allows the President to seek a review of government appointments. In his letter, he requested that Gautam not be allowed to assume office until the CBI has completed its investigation.

Furthermore, Gandhi has been vocal in his criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, suggesting that the appointment reflects a lack of concern for women’s safety. He argued that appointing Gautam to such a high constitutional position could undermine the ongoing investigation and the hopes of Bhandari’s family for justice.

The ongoing situation continues to unfold as the family and supporters remain vigilant in their quest for justice. The response from the President and the government will be closely monitored as the investigation progresses and public sentiment grows. The case has highlighted broader issues surrounding women’s safety and accountability in India, prompting discussions that extend beyond the immediate circumstances of Bhandari’s tragic death.
