BJP MP Anil Baluni Celebrates Holi in Dhoor Village, Encourages Former Residents to Return

The CSR Journal Magazine

In an effort to draw attention to rural depopulation in Uttarakhand, Garhwal MP Anil Baluni recently visited Dhoor village, where he celebrated Holi alongside current residents and former villagers who had temporarily returned for the festival. The gathering brought renewed activity to the sparsely populated settlement and symbolized an attempt to reconnect displaced families with their roots.

Concern Over ‘Ghost Villages’ in Uttarakhand

Migration from hill regions of Uttarakhand has been a longstanding issue, with many villages witnessing steep population declines over the past few decades. Addressing the gathering, Baluni reportedly highlighted how the search for employment and better facilities in urban centers has resulted in numerous rural settlements becoming nearly deserted, often referred to as “ghost villages.”

He noted that improvements in infrastructure, including road connectivity, electricity, and water supply, have created new possibilities for reversing the trend. According to him, the changing development landscape offers former residents an opportunity to re-establish ties with their ancestral homes.

Push for Cultural Revival and Community Engagement

Baluni has been advocating for the revival of traditional festivals and local cultural practices, aligning such efforts with broader calls to strengthen grassroots identity and heritage. By encouraging former residents to participate in village celebrations, he aims to restore community bonds weakened by migration.

The Holi event in Dhoor village reportedly served as an emotional reunion, with families reconnecting and celebrating together despite demographic challenges. Such initiatives are seen as symbolic steps toward rekindling social and cultural life in declining rural pockets.

Electoral and Demographic Implications

Migration has also had political implications. Hill districts such as Pauri have experienced shifts in population distribution, which over time can affect electoral boundaries and representation. Baluni has referenced these demographic changes as a sign of the broader structural impact migration is having on the region.

‘Apna Vote Apne Gaon’ Initiative

As part of his outreach, Baluni has promoted campaigns like “Apna Vote Apne Gaon,” encouraging people to register as voters in their native villages. The initiative seeks to strengthen civic engagement and reinforce emotional and administrative ties between migrants and their hometowns.

While the long-term impact of such measures remains to be seen, the renewed focus on rural revitalization reflects growing concern over sustaining Uttarakhand’s hill communities in the face of continued urban migration.
