The CSR Journal Magazine

Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay has offered prayers at the revered Maa Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, Assam, on May 26. This visit is part of Tobgay’s official trip to Assam, aimed at strengthening ties between the two regions. The Kamakhya Temple, situated approximately seven kilometres from the city centre, is recognised as one of India’s most important “Shakti shrines,” attracting numerous devotees and tourists alike.

Located on the Nilachal hills, the temple is particularly significant for both tantric worshippers and the Hindu community. It serves as a site where the cultural practices of Aryan and non-Aryan communities intersect, reflecting the diverse spiritual landscape of the region.

The temple’s historical significance is noteworthy, as it was initially destroyed by Kala Pahar and subsequently reconstructed in 1565 by Chilarai, the then-king of the Koch dynasty. Dedicated to various forms of Mother Shakti, the temple comprises three main chambers, forming a sacred complex revered by worshippers.

Diplomatic Engagement and Appreciation

On the occasion of his visit, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma publicly expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Tobgay. Sarma conveyed his belief that the relationship between Assam and Bhutan would further strengthen in the near future. He acknowledged the longstanding partnership with Bhutan, underscoring the mutual respect and cooperation that characterises their ties.

Responding to Tobgay’s post on X, Sarma’s message highlighted the value Assam places on its multifaceted relationship with Bhutan. He stated, “Thank you for your wonderful visit and the meaningful discussions, Hon’ble Prime Minister.” Sarma mentioned his hope for enhanced collaboration under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During his interactions, Tobgay detailed discussions he had with both Assam’s Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and Chief Minister Sarma. He highlighted their shared commitment to deepening the ties between Assam and Bhutan, which have endured through various cultural and diplomatic exchanges over the years.

Warm Welcome and Cultural Ties

Upon his arrival in Guwahati, Prime Minister Tobgay received a grand reception from Assam’s Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. This warm welcome exemplifies the close diplomatic and cultural relations that exist between the two regions.

Tobgay proceeded to the State Guest House at Koinadhora, where he was formally received by Assam Cabinet Minister Atul Bora. The minister emphasised the importance of the historic ties between Assam and Bhutan, which he characterised as rooted in “mutual trust, harmony, and deep socio-cultural ties.”

Bora voiced optimism that the Bhutanese Prime Minister’s visit would create opportunities for enhanced cooperation, particularly in the realms of cultural exchange and economic development. The visit aims to strengthen the existing bonds further and explore new avenues for partnership between Assam and Bhutan.

High-ranking officials, including the Director General of Police Harmeet Singh and General Administration Department Secretary Narsing Pawar, also attended the reception, indicating the wide-ranging interest and support for fostering closer relations with Bhutan.
