Bengaluru Software Engineer Dies by Suicide After Dispute with Mother-in-Law over Cooking

The CSR Journal Magazine

A 35-year-old software engineer, identified as Sushma, has died by suicide at her residence in Bengaluru after a domestic altercation with her mother-in-law. This incident represents the second suicide among tech professionals in the city within a week.

Local law enforcement has initiated an investigation to explore the circumstances surrounding this tragic event, with allegations of dowry harassment emerging in the aftermath. Sushma was married to Puneeth Kumar for five years and the couple has a four-year-old son. According to police reports, there had been frequent disagreements within the household, as noted by Sushma’s family.

Details of the Incident Unfold

Authorities reported that arguments between Sushma and her mother-in-law, Kalpana, had become commonplace, often arising from trivial matters. On the day of the incident, a dispute allegedly occurred over cooking responsibilities, which escalated tensions in the household. Sushma’s relatives have claimed that Kalpana had consistently prevented her from cooking and subjected her to harassment regarding various domestic issues.

In a state of distress caused by the ongoing discord, Sushma reportedly took her own life by hanging herself at home. Following the incident, her family promptly lodged a complaint with the police. As a result of this complaint, Puneeth Kumar has been arrested on allegations related to dowry harassment, while efforts are underway to locate her mother-in-law, Kalpana. A case has been formally registered at the Soladevanahalli Police Station and the investigation is ongoing.

Second Case of Suicide Among Tech Professionals

This recent tragedy follows another incident on February 28 when a 27-year-old tech employee named Vidyajyoti reportedly died by suicide in her residence located in MEI Layout, Bagalagunte. Vidyajyoti was employed with Bosch and was working remotely at the time of her death. Police investigations revealed that she was in a relationship with a person from a different caste, a union that had received approval from both families.

However, a preliminary investigation disclosed that her parents had consulted an astrologer who predicted potential misunderstandings in the marriage two years down the line, advising a nine-day ritual to mitigate the predicted issues.

Tragically, it was reported that on the ninth day of the ritual, when her parents were away, Vidyajyoti allegedly hanged herself from a ceiling fan in her room. The discovery of the incident came to light after her father knocked repeatedly and eventually forced open the door when there was no response. An Unnatural Death Report has been filed, and investigations are still in progress.

With two distressing incidents involving tech professionals in Bengaluru occurring within just a few days, law enforcement continues to thoroughly investigate both cases. They are looking into the allegations and circumstances to better understand the factors that led to these heartbreaking tragedies.
