Bengaluru Plans India’s First Fully Elevated Rail Terminal Project

The CSR Journal Magazine

Bengaluru is gearing up for a major upgrade in its rail infrastructure with plans for India’s first fully elevated railway terminal in Yelahanka. South Western Railway has proposed this ambitious Rs 6,000 crore project, drawing inspiration from China’s Hangzhou station. The airport-style hub aims to become the city’s fourth major railway terminal, easing the strain on existing stations. Spanning 20 acres, it will feature 16 platforms, a big jump from the current five at Yelahanka station. The land will come partly from the 15-acre Railway Wheel Factory campus, plus two acres of private land and the existing station area. This move promises to transform travel for millions in India’s Silicon Valley.

The proposal comes at a time when Bengaluru’s rail network is bursting at the seams. With passenger numbers soaring, especially during festivals, the new terminal will handle growing demands efficiently. Officials say it will operate under a public-private partnership or Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer model. Divisional Railway Manager Ashutosh K Singh has confirmed the plan is still in early stages, awaiting Railway Board approval. If greenlit, it could redefine urban rail travel in India.

Vertical Design to Maximise Space

The standout feature of this terminal is its clever vertical architecture, perfect for a land-scarce city like Bengaluru where property prices are sky-high. Train tracks will run on the basement and ground levels, while passenger areas like concourses, ticket counters, waiting halls, and platforms will stack up above. This multi-level setup separates arriving and departing crowds to avoid chaos—those getting off trains head to a lower basement exit, while others enter via the main concourse and climb to platforms.

A senior South Western Railway official called it “the country’s first fully elevated railway terminal.” Connectivity is another highlight: it will link straight to Kogilu Cross Metro station on the Blue Line, with an elevated road and main entrance from the Yelahanka-Doddaballapur highway. This design not only saves precious ground space but also speeds up passenger movement, much like modern airports. Engineers believe it will set a new benchmark for Indian railways in crowded metros.

Tackling Soaring Passenger Traffic

Bengaluru’s three current terminals – KSR Bengaluru, Yeswantpur, and Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal – are under massive pressure. They manage 140 originating, 139 terminating, and 142 through trains daily. During Deepavali this year, South Western Railway handled over 9.5 lakh passengers, running a record 316 trains in one day. The Bengaluru division alone felt the pinch, with platforms overflowing and delays common.

“In a city like Bengaluru, land is very expensive, so vertical development makes more sense,” the railway official told Moneycontrol. The new terminal will boast 10 stabling lines and 15 pit lines for maintenance, ensuring smooth operations. It directly addresses these traffic woes by adding capacity without gobbling up more land. As the city grows, with IT hubs and migrants pouring in, such projects are vital to keep the rail system humming.

Path Ahead and Bigger Impact

Though exciting, the project is still nascent. The proposal sits with the Railway Board for sanction, and timelines remain unclear. Once approved, construction could take years, but supporters see it as a long-term win. Yelahanka’s location on the city’s northern edge makes it ideal, linking suburbs to the core without clogging central roads.

This terminal could spark a wave of vertical rail projects across India, especially in space-starved cities like Mumbai and Delhi. For Bengaluru commuters, it means shorter waits, better facilities, and seamless metro-rail integration. As discussions progress, residents hope for quick nods to turn this vision into reality, boosting the city’s connectivity and economy.
