The West Bengal government has declared that the unlawful functioning of madrasas within the state will not be tolerated. This statement was made by Minister Dilip Ghosh on September 14, who emphasised the necessity for institutions to possess valid government approval in order to operate legally. Ghosh made these remarks while addressing reporters, indicating that the administration is taking a firm stance on this issue.

Ghosh articulated that there have been ongoing concerns regarding madrasas for the past twenty years. He assured the public that the government is committed to addressing these issues and finding viable solutions. His statements suggest a proactive approach by the authorities to regulate and monitor educational institutions operating in the region.

According to Ghosh, any madrasa wishing to continue its functions must obtain the necessary permissions from the government. He reiterated that “anything illegal will not be tolerated,” highlighting the administration’s zero-tolerance policy towards unauthorised operations.

Government Issues Closure Notices Following Review of Madrasas

The announcement regarding the illegal madrasas comes in the wake of closure notices issued by the West Bengal government to a total of 252 institutions. This action forms part of a broader review of Islamic educational institutions across the state, aimed at ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. The closure notices mark a significant move by the government to tighten the oversight of educational facilities operating without proper sanction.

In his comments, Ghosh noted the suspicions surrounding various aspects of madrasa operations. He mentioned that concerns regarding these institutions have been voiced repeatedly by numerous leaders over the years, but he acknowledged that concrete solutions have been lacking until now. He expressed confidence in the government’s ability to resolve these longstanding issues.

Ghosh’s statements reflect the government’s dedication to ensuring that all educational institutions adhere to established guidelines, with a view to fostering a transparent and accountable educational landscape.

Chief Minister Highlights Development Projects Amid Closure Orders

Alongside the announcements regarding the unauthorised madrasas, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari also shared updates on several major development projects within the state. On the same day, Adhikari mentioned initiatives amounting to Rs 15,000 crore, aimed at bolstering the state’s infrastructure and public services. This emphasis on development highlights the government’s dual focus on regulatory compliance and progressive initiatives.

In his address, Adhikari referenced a Rs 600 crore Amul facility and a robotic fire-fighting system currently under development. These projects signify a push towards modernising essential services and enhancing disaster response capabilities in the state. He noted that substantial progress has been made on these fronts in just four months, indicating an accelerated pace of development in West Bengal.

Furthermore, he pointed out the conversion of a Rs 700 crore commitment for a project in Gangoni, reinforcing the government’s ongoing efforts to invest in comprehensive infrastructure advancements. By addressing pressing needs while simultaneously pursuing major projects, the administration aims to create a conducive environment for both educational institutions and public welfare schemes.
