The CSR Journal Magazine

On March 25, Bangladesh commemorates Genocide Day, a day marked by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman who extended his condolences to the victims of the atrocities committed during the 1971 Liberation War. The Prime Minister’s sentiments were expressed via a message on the platform X, emphasizing the significance of this date in the history of Bangladesh.

Prime Minister Rahman described March 25, 1971, as a day of profound disgrace, recalling the brutal actions of the Pakistani military forces under the banner of ‘Operation Searchlight’. He remarked on the indiscriminate violence inflicted upon civilians, intellectuals, and educators, particularly in key locations such as Dhaka University and the Rajarbagh Police Lines, resulting in numerous casualties.

In his message, Rahman characterized the events of that night as a meticulously planned massacre, inviting further examination of why the organized aggression could not be adequately resisted at that time. He underscored the importance of remembering these historical injustices to further honor the sacrifices made by the martyrs of the Liberation War.

Call for Recognition of Sacrifices

During the observance, the Prime Minister highlighted the pivotal moment when the 8th East Bengal Regiment in Chattogram initiated an armed uprising by declaring, “We Revolt,” thereby sparking a nine-month-long Liberation War. He called upon citizens to acknowledge the values of independence that arose from these events, stating the necessity of recognizing the atrocities of March 25 for both current and future generations.

Rahman urged the nation to adhere to the spirit of equality, human dignity, and social justice that defined the Liberation War, emphasizing the collective responsibility to build a fair, prosperous, and democratic Bangladesh. He expressed hopes for all commemorative activities held on this day to be successful, praying for the peace and forgiveness of those who lost their lives during the genocide.

International Acknowledgment of Genocide

The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, a human rights organization dedicated to combatting religious discrimination, expressed its approval of a recent resolution introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives. The resolution, presented by Congressman Greg Landsman on March 20, seeks formal recognition of the genocide committed in Bangladesh during the 1971 Liberation War, further emphasizing the need for global awareness and acknowledgment of this historical atrocity.

This advocacy for recognition aligns with the ongoing efforts to honor and remember the victims of the past while fostering a message of unity and resilience in the face of historical injustices. As Bangladesh reflects on this tragic chapter in its history, calls for acknowledgment and commemoration continue to resonate within both national and international dialogues.
