The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) held the ‘Manobotar Din’ across Assam as part of its second programme in the ‘Zubeen Garg Memorial Week’ on September 14. This event was designed to honour the humanitarian principles and ideals demonstrated by the late Zubeen Garg. Various activities were conducted to mark this occasion, particularly focusing on blood donation drives throughout the state. The initiative showcased the organisation’s commitment to social responsibility and community welfare.

In Guwahati, the primary event of ‘Manobotar Din’ took place at the Narengi field. AJP members, including party leaders and supporters, participated actively, with a total of 101 individuals engaging in the blood donation initiative across different district committees. The blood donation aims to support those in dire need, showcasing a dedicated spirit of helping others within the community.

AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi joined other members in donating blood at the Narengi site. He articulated the significance of the day, emphasising that ‘Manobotar Din’ serves as a means to perpetuate Zubeen Garg’s philosophies and ideals. He encouraged participants to integrate Garg’s ethical values into their daily lives, ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire future generations.

Activities Promoting Social Responsibility

Alongside the blood donation drives, the AJP has been engaged in various social initiatives as part of ‘Zubeen Week’. General Secretary Jagadish Bhuyan highlighted the importance of embodying Zubeen Garg’s values in everyday life, stating that such actions would keep Garg’s spirit alive amongst the people of Assam. He called for the translation of Garg’s principles of love, humanity, and social responsibility into tangible actions, framing this as a meaningful homage to the late artist.

The AJP has undertaken multiple public welfare activities during this week, designed to encourage citizens to reflect on the contributions made by Garg to society. The ongoing efforts aim to foster a sense of communal responsibility and instil a culture of altruism that resonates with Garg’s approach to life and art.

Looking ahead, the organisation has planned another dedicated observance titled ‘Book Day’, which will take place on the following day across the state. This initiative aims to promote reading and literacy, elements which align with the overarching goals of personal development and educational advancement that Garg valued throughout his life.

Legacy of Zubeen Garg

Zubeen Garg tragically passed away on September 19, 2025, in a scuba diving accident in Singapore, just one day before he was scheduled to perform at the Northeast India Festival. His untimely death shocked many within the community, highlighting the impact he had through his musical career and social contributions.

The Northeast Festival, an event overseen by Shyamkanu Mahanta since its inception in 2013, had to navigate the aftermath of Garg’s passing, leading to significant developments surrounding the festival’s organisation. Following Garg’s death, Mahanta was arrested, stirring controversy within the regional cultural landscape.

As the AJP continues to honour Zubeen Garg’s memory, the ongoing events and tributes reflect an enduring commitment to his vision and values, underlining the importance of social connectivity and community service in Assam. The initiatives aim not only to remember Garg but to actively engage citizens in meaningful action that echoes his legacy and humanitarian spirit.
