The CSR Journal Magazine

Senior IAS officer Ashwini Bhide is likely to be appointed as the next Municipal Commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), potentially becoming the first woman to hold the post, according to sources in the Maharashtra government.

Sources indicated that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has approved her appointment, with the final decision expected to be announced soon. If confirmed, Bhide will succeed current BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, who is set to retire on March 31.

Front-Runner For Top Civic Post

Bhide, a 1995-batch IAS officer, is currently serving as Additional Chief Secretary in the Chief Minister’s Office. She has previously held several key administrative roles and is widely regarded for her experience in handling large-scale infrastructure projects.

During her tenure as Managing Director of the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRCL), she played a significant role in executing major urban infrastructure initiatives, earning recognition for her administrative capabilities.

If appointed, she is expected to have a full term extending up to 2030.

Several Senior IAS Officers In The Race

The post of BMC Commissioner had drawn several senior IAS officers into contention. Among them were Sanjay Mukherjee, a 1996-batch officer and current MMRDA Commissioner; Asim Gupta, a 1994-batch IAS officer serving as Additional Chief Secretary to Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde; and Milind Mhaiskar, who is currently Additional Chief Secretary in the Public Works and Forest Departments.

Despite strong competition, Bhide has emerged as the leading choice for the position.

Historic Appointment If Confirmed

If her appointment is finalised, Bhide will become the first woman to head the BMC, one of India’s richest civic bodies. The move is being seen as a significant administrative decision, reflecting the state government’s confidence in her leadership.

An official announcement is expected following the retirement of the incumbent commissioner.
