All You Need to Know About Vande Bharat Sleeper’s Strict Rules and Premium Comfort

The CSR Journal Magazine

Indian Railways is preparing to introduce a new chapter in overnight train travel with the launch of the Vande Bharat Sleeper service between Guwahati and Kolkata later this month. Designed for long-distance journeys, the train is expected to improve rail connectivity between the Northeast and eastern India while offering passengers a more organised and comfortable travel experience.

The inaugural Vande Bharat Sleeper will be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Malda in West Bengal on January 17, officials said, following weeks of operational planning by the Centre and the Railway Board.

Unlike conventional long-distance trains, the Vande Bharat Sleeper will operate with tightly controlled ticketing norms. Only passengers holding confirmed tickets will be allowed to travel. There will be no RAC, waiting-list passengers, VIP quota or emergency quota on this service. Senior railway officials will also not be permitted to use passes to board the train.

Railway sources said the aim is to eliminate overcrowding and ensure every traveller gets a full berth. All berths will be released from the first day of the advance reservation period. Digital booking will be mandatory, and only fully reimbursable duty passes—similar to those allowed on Rajdhani trains—will be accepted. Complimentary and concessional passes will not be valid.

The Vande Bharat Sleeper will feature 11 coaches—five 3AC, four 2AC and one 1AC—offering a total of 823 berths. Of these, 611 are in 3AC, 188 in 2AC and 24 in 1AC.

Vande Bharat Sleeper Fares Slab-Based, Start at Rs 960

Fares have been fixed on a distance-based slab system, comparable to airline pricing. For journeys up to 400 km, tickets will cost Rs 960 in 3AC, Rs 1,240 in 2AC and Rs 1,520 in 1AC. For the longest route of 3,500 km, fares rise to Rs 8,400, Rs 10,850 and Rs 13,300 respectively, with gradual increases for intermediate distances.

Passenger comfort has been a key focus. The train offers ergonomically designed berths with improved cushioning, smoother suspension systems to reduce vibration, and lower noise levels. Automatic doors with vestibules allow easier movement between coaches.

Each passenger will receive a newly designed, higher-quality bedroll with upgraded blankets and covers. Hygiene measures include disinfectant technology, while safety systems such as Kavach automatic train protection and an emergency talk-back facility have been installed.

Onboard staff will wear uniforms, and passengers will be served regional cuisine during the journey. Officials said the service is meant to present a modern yet culturally rooted travel experience, with uniform rules and transparent ticketing across all classes.

With its combination of strict regulations, advanced safety systems and enhanced comfort, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is being positioned as a benchmark for India’s future long-distance rail services.
