All India Football Federation Prepares for Crucial Meeting on ISL Commercial Rights

The CSR Journal Magazine

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is preparing for a pivotal Special General Body Meeting (SGM) on Saturday, focusing on the future commercial framework of the Indian Super League (ISL). This decision comes in response to escalating friction between the AIFF and ISL clubs over commercial rights. A substantial portion of the meeting will revolve around identifying the league’s next commercial partner amid proposals for constitutional amendments and the larger structural reform necessary for Indian football following a tumultuous ISL season.

AIFF’s official notification confirmed that the SGM would address constitutional changes that align with the National Sports Governance Act 2025. Discussions are also expected to encompass potential commercial partnerships related to the ISL, Indian Women’s League, and the Super League Cup. Stakeholders anticipate that these deliberations will set a new course for partnership dynamics in Indian football.

One of the primary subjects of interest is the future commercial model of the ISL. Earlier this year, Genius Sports emerged as the leading bidder for a proposed 15+5 year cycle, presenting a bid worth Rs 2129 crore. However, this proposal has reportedly faced resistance from various ISL clubs, which are advocating for a club-led commercial approach that allows clubs to maintain greater control over the league’s financial interests.

Club-Led Model Gathers Support Amid Challenges

In the proposed club-backed model, franchises demand that they retain 90 per cent of the economic interests associated with the league, with the AIFF maintaining the remaining portion. This push for a different structure reflects the clubs’ desire for more autonomy, particularly following the unresolved issues that emerged during the 2025-26 ISL season. The expiration of the Master Rights Agreement between the AIFF and Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) has left the future of the league in a complex state, leading to delays and a compressed 13-match season.

Officials from the AIFF are anticipated to engage with ISL club owners and representatives prior to the SGM, aiming to establish a consensus regarding the commercial framework. This interaction is aimed at alleviating concerns and ensuring that the upcoming discussions yield constructive outcomes for the future of the league.

The backdrop of this meeting is fraught with uncertainty, as the unresolved nature of the ISL’s commercial rights battle continues to raise questions about the sustainability and operational integrity of Indian football amidst administrative and legal challenges.

Constitutional Challenges Threaten Meeting Validity

Even before the start of the SGM, questions surrounding its validity have emerged, primarily regarding the AIFF constitution. AIFF executive committee member Valanka Alemao has raised concerns over the legality of convening the meeting, alleging it could breach provisions established by the Supreme Court regarding the federation’s constitution. In a legal notice to the AIFF, Alemao contended that the necessary framework for the General Body had yet to be constituted ahead of the meeting.

According to the AIFF constitution, the General Body must consist of representatives from all member associations, fifteen distinguished players—including at least five women—as well as representatives from ISL clubs, I-League, Indian Women’s League, referees, and coaches. Alemao’s concerns hinge on the incomplete representation of player, referee, and coach associations, which she argues jeopardises the quorum needed for a legitimate meeting.

Moreover, she has cautioned that moving ahead with the SGM under the current circumstances could result in contempt of the Supreme Court’s prior ruling concerning the constitution’s adoption. Despite these objections, the meeting is likely to occur, highlighting ongoing administrative uncertainties and complex legalities currently facing Indian football.
