The CSR Journal Magazine

All 20 Indian crew members aboard MT Jalveer, who were evacuated after their vessel came under attack off the coast of Oman, have safely returned to India, the Indian Embassy in Muscat said on Monday.

In a post on X, the mission said Ambassador Prashant Pise interacted with the crew members in Muscat before their departure and wished them a safe journey home.

“Ambassador of India to Oman interacted with the 20 Indian crew members of MT Jalveer in Muscat ahead of their repatriation to India and wished them a safe journey home,” the embassy said.

It added that all 20 sailors had now safely returned to the country.

Embassy Reaffirms Commitment To Indian Nationals

The Indian mission said it remained committed to extending prompt assistance to Indians in distress and ensuring their welfare and safe return.

“The Embassy remains committed to extending prompt assistance and support to Indian nationals in distress and ensuring their welfare and safe return home,” it said.

According to the embassy, the rescued crew members expressed gratitude to the Indian mission and the Omani authorities for their swift intervention and efforts in ensuring the safe evacuation of all personnel.

MT Jalveer, a Guinea-Bissau-flagged merchant vessel carrying 20 Indian nationals, came under attack off an Oman port on Thursday.

Third Incident In Four Days

The attack on MT Jalveer marked the third incident involving merchant ships with Indian crew members in a span of four days.

On June 8, US military forces disabled the Palau-flagged oil tanker MT Marivex, which had 24 Indian seafarers on board. All crew members were rescued safely.

A day later, another Palau-flagged tanker, MT Settebello, was struck. Of the 24 Indian sailors aboard, three lost their lives in the incident.

The attacks heightened concerns over maritime security in the region and the safety of commercial shipping routes.

India Attributes Attacks To US Navy

On Thursday, India stated that the strikes involving MT Settebello, MT Marivex and MT Jalveer had originated from the US Navy.

The incidents occurred amid heightened tensions and military activity in waters near Oman, a strategically important area for global maritime trade.

The safe return of the MT Jalveer crew marks the successful conclusion of the latest rescue effort undertaken with the support of Indian diplomatic channels and Omani authorities.

The government has not yet announced any additional measures regarding the safety of Indian seafarers operating in the region, though the incidents have once again highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by merchant vessels in conflict-prone waters.
