Alibaba Co-founder Advocates for Non-stop Work Ethic Among Entrepreneurs

The CSR Journal Magazine

Joe Tsai, co-founder and chairman of Alibaba, recently advised aspiring entrepreneurs to abandon the pursuit of work-life balance. During his address to students at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business, Tsai emphasized that launching a startup demands a commitment to work extended hours and to prioritize professional engagements over personal time. He stated that founders must be ready to work long hours and accept that boundaries between their personal and professional lives will likely blur.

Choose Co-Founders You’d Actually Hang Out With

Tsai articulated that the commitment required for building a startup can be more manageable if founders collaborate with people they genuinely enjoy working alongside. He highlighted the importance of selecting co-founders and team members who foster a positive working relationship. “One simple test,” Tsai suggested, is to consider whether one would want to socialize with a potential partner outside of work. This question, he noted, can indicate personal compatibility, which he regards as essential for startup teams that often spend extensive hours together.

Lessons from Tsai’s Partnership with Jack Ma

Reflecting on his partnership with Jack Ma, Tsai shared how their collaboration extended beyond business to mutual mentorship. He acknowledged the significant impact that Ma had on his personal growth and learning, stating, “He’s taught me a lot of things, and I felt like I could learn a lot from him.” This perspective on partnerships emphasizes the synergy that can occur when working closely with compatible individuals.

Jack Ma Defends the ‘996’ Work Culture

Tsai’s insights resonate with similar viewpoints shared by notable global business figures. Jack Ma has notably defended China’s contentious “996” work culture, which entails working from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., six days a week. Ma suggested that if one is passionate about their work, then the long hours should not be perceived as a burden. He argued that the enjoyment of one’s job makes the demanding schedule more manageable. “If you find a job you like, the 996 problem does not exist,” Ma explained, implying that a lack of passion makes long hours feel tedious.

Buffett and Musk Back Long-Hour Commitment

Warren Buffett has echoed these sentiments over the years, asserting that genuine enthusiasm for one’s work can alleviate the pressures associated with labor. He has emphasized that job satisfaction greatly depends on the quality of colleagues and the environment in which one works. Additionally, Elon Musk has consistently advocated for rigorous work schedules, claiming that committing to 80 to 100 hours of work per week can provide a competitive edge for founders.

Narayana Murthy Sparks India’s 70-Hour Workweek Debate

In India, similar discussions around work ethics have emerged. N. R. Narayana Murthy, co-founder of Infosys, provoked a debate in 2023 when he advised young professionals to consider extending their work hours to around 70 per week to enhance productivity in the country. He posited that strengthening India’s work culture requires greater dedication from younger generations to facilitate national growth and development. This call for increased work commitment reflects a broader trend in the global business environment.
