Chinese President Xi Jinping departed from New Delhi on September 13 after participating in the two-day BRICS Summit, which was chaired by India. The summit was held at Bharat Mandapam, a significant platform for discussions among member states.

During this summit, Xi engaged in meaningful dialogue with leaders of other nations and held bilateral discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The interactions were centred around enhancing cooperation and addressing key global issues amidst the backdrop of changing geopolitical dynamics.

The culmination of the summit was marked by the adoption of the New Delhi declaration on September 12, which outlined the member nations’ collective objectives and commitments moving forward.

Bilateral Meeting Between Xi Jinping and Narendra Modi

In a key bilateral meeting, President Xi and Prime Minister Modi focused on reaffirming and strengthening the long-term strategic relationship between China and India. Xi emphasised the necessity to perceive the ties between the two nations from a developmental perspective, acknowledging their unique differences.

Xi articulated that despite the complexities, both countries have managed to “support and help each other to achieve common development.” He noted that this visit marked his second trip to New Delhi in 12 years, and highlighted the frequency of their meetings, stating they have convened over 20 times during this period.

Modi welcomed Xi warmly, expressing gratitude for China’s support during India’s chairmanship of the BRICS. He remarked, “It gives me great pleasure to extend a warm welcome to you. Thank you very much for your positive remarks at the BRICS Summit.”

Commitments to Resolving Issues

In their discussions, both leaders reiterated their commitment to seeking a fair and reasonable resolution to boundary issues, emphasising the need for mutual respect and understanding. The importance of addressing differences without allowing them to escalate into disputes was also underscored.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement following the meeting, confirming that the two leaders professed a necessity to take a strategic and long-term view of their nations’ relationship. Modi highlighted the importance of navigating through challenges with mutual sensitivity and interest.

The ongoing dialogue and cooperation were well received, with both parties acknowledging the steady progress in relations since their last meeting in Tianjin in August 2025. The tone of the meeting suggested a direction towards constructive engagement and partnership between China and India.
