National Security Advisor Ajit Doval is currently in Beijing, where he met with Chinese Vice President Han Zhang on Tuesday. The primary focus of their discussions was to explore methods for enhancing peace and harmony in border areas, as well as to identify avenues for improving bilateral relations across various domains. Doval’s visit is part of a two-day trip dedicated to the Special Representatives talks concerning the India-China boundary dispute with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Significance of the Talks

The talks take on added importance as they precede Chinese President Xi Jinping’s anticipated visit to New Delhi for the BRICS summit scheduled for September 12-13. The context of Doval’s discussions is crucial, given the ongoing tensions related to border issues, specifically concerning Arunachal Pradesh, which continue to impact diplomatic relations between India and China. The Indian Embassy has reported that both leaders emphasised the need to foster peaceful interactions in border zones while also promoting cooperation in economic, political, and multilateral areas, in accordance with agreements made by the nations’ leadership.

Doval and Wang Yi are tasked as Special Representatives within an established mechanism intended to address the India-China border dispute that spans 3,488 km. Although previous attempts at resolution have not fully settled the issue, both parties consider this mechanism beneficial for managing ongoing tensions. The boundary talks are a vital channel for dialogue on the subject and for discussing mutual interests, as highlighted by the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Lin Jian.
