Actor Suhasini Mulay Marries Scientist Atul Gurtu at Sixty

The CSR Journal Magazine

Actor Suhasini Mulay, recognised for her roles in films such as Lagaan and Jodhaa Akbar, recently shared her experience of marrying scientist Atul Gurtu at the age of sixty. She highlighted that her delay in marriage was due to her search for a partner who understood the significance of equality. In a candid conversation, she expressed that despite being open to the idea of marriage, she had yet to meet a suitable match throughout her life.

During an interview on the show Suhana Safar, Suhasini remarked, “I married for the first time at the age of sixty. Until then, I hadn’t found the right match.” Atul Gurtu, a prominent scientist, intrigued her immensely, even though she admitted to lacking understanding of his scientific discussions.

A Unique Meeting on Social Media

Suhasini recounted her initial encounter with Atul on Facebook, where she joined to explore potential job opportunities as suggested by a co-star. However, her focus swiftly shifted when she came across Atul’s profile. She recalled thinking, “Physicists are on Facebook too?” His work on the Large Hadron Collider resonated with her, leading her to reach out with a simple inquiry regarding the project.

As their correspondence progressed, Atul made it clear that he was looking for a life partner, though his approach remained indirect. Suhasini jocularly reflected on her initial disbelief about finding someone after years of searching. “I thought, ‘When I couldn’t find the right person in sixty years, how am I suddenly going to find him now?'” she shared.

Given the prevalence of fake profiles on social media, Suhasini adopted a cautious stance regarding their budding relationship. When Atul requested her phone number, she consulted a friend for guidance. Encouragement from her friend became pivotal, as they highlighted that opportunities tend to narrow with age. After verifying Atul’s details with his workplace, Suhasini felt reassured enough to take the next step.

Memorable Moments and Family Reactions

Upon their eventual meeting, which took place during Diwali, Suhasini took precautions to ensure Atul resembled his online photographs, arriving late for their date. Following their meeting, the relationship progressed rapidly, leading to their marriage on January 16, just two months later. “Once we had made the decision, there was no point in waiting,” she stated.

Suhasini also recounted her mother’s surprise upon hearing about the engagement. Initially in disbelief, her mother subsequently expressed her approval, impressed by Atul’s intelligence. His reasoning for marrying at sixty resonated with her mother, particularly his desire to embrace happiness and be open to the possibility of failure.

Reflecting on the societal judgement associated with her late marriage, Suhasini noted that she had faced similar scrutiny when she chose not to marry in her youth. As a public figure, she constantly navigated the expectations of society regarding personal choices. Despite past pressures, she remained steadfast in her conviction and lived life on her own terms.
