AAP Announces First Batch of Candidates for Assam Assembly Elections

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has published its initial list of 14 candidates for the forthcoming Assam Assembly elections scheduled for April 9. The announcement, made on Sunday, features several new contenders from various constituencies throughout the Brahmaputra valley. Notably, Anurupa Dekaraja, the party’s state vice-president, will be contesting from the Guwahati Central constituency. Additionally, Renuka Timungpi is set to represent AAP in Bokajan.

The candidates’ list, released by Rajesh Sarma, the Assam in-charge for AAP, includes Achyut Das for Naoboicha, Tapan Gogoi for Sivasagar, Zahidul Islam Khan for Chenga, Ranjeet Boro for Nadua, Pallav Saikia for Titabor, and Jinna Amir Hussain for East Goalpara, among others.

AAP’s Independent Strategy

Under the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal, AAP has opted to contest the elections independently, refraining from forming alliances with other opposition parties. The current 126-member Assembly is predominantly led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which holds 64 seats. Its coalition partners include the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) with nine seats, United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) with seven seats, and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) with three seats.

On the opposition side, the Indian National Congress holds 26 seats, followed by the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) with 15 seats, and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) with one legislator. Furthermore, there is one Independent member within the Assembly.

Upcoming Election Timeline and Context

The votes for the Assam Assembly elections are set to be counted on May 4. Following the announcement of the election schedule by the Election Commission of India, the model code of conduct has been enforced in the state.

In a related development, the Congress party has also disclosed its second list of 23 candidates for the upcoming elections, having designated nominees for a total of 65 seats thus far. Additionally, the party has reserved 15 seats for its alliance partners in the region.

The upcoming elections will mark the first since the 2023 delimitation exercise, during which the boundaries of constituencies across the state were redrawn while maintaining the total number of Assembly seats.
