The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed nine teams across Bihar in response to a potential flood threat stemming from heavy rainfall and flash floods in Nepal. NDRF Commandant Hitender Pal Singh Kandari announced the preparations on Wednesday, noting that additional teams have been positioned in vulnerable areas.
Kandari stated that NDRF teams are typically pre-positioned in flood-prone regions of the state as part of the force’s monsoon preparedness strategy. The deployment of extra personnel followed indications from Nepal of an increased water flow expected into Bihar.
“In the monsoon season, we deploy our teams in advance to areas with potential flood risks,” Kandari explained. He added that the evolving situation in Nepal warranted the dispatch of additional teams, bringing the total to nine currently deployed in Bihar, with others on alert.
The NDRF is also addressing ongoing emergencies within the state, including a recent boat capsizing incident in Bhagalpur and multiple drowning incidents. “Our team is currently responding to these emergencies,” Kandari noted, emphasizing the importance of quick response capabilities in flood situations.
Kandari expressed particular concern about the possibility of floodwaters from Nepal entering Bihar, stating, “It is expected that the floodwater from Nepal will enter India, which may lead to a flood situation here.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has reached out to Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary to assure the state government of all necessary assistance from the Centre in managing any flood-related emergencies. Shah has also instructed authorities to enhance preparedness measures and confirmed that the NDRF is being mobilized to support state efforts.
In related news, around 105 Indians are among foreign nationals reported missing following a flash flood in the Bhote Koshi River in Nepal’s Rasuwa area. The Nepal Tourism Board provided this information based on preliminary records from tourism and travel companies, indicating that 384 travelers, including 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepali nationals, are unaccounted for. Furthermore, the missing list includes 37 non-resident Indians.
Following the flash flood that occurred around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, agencies including the Nepal Tourism Board and Tourist Police are actively working to verify the safety status and whereabouts of affected tourists and travelers.
