Aamir Khan Says ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ OTT Release Was Always Planned, Sets SonyLIV Premiere Date

The CSR Journal Magazine

Aamir Khan has confirmed that the upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par is set for an exclusive release on an OTT platform, which was part of the original strategy. He stated that although the intention was to release the film digitally from the beginning, he wanted to allow time for it to play in theaters before launching it online. In an interview, he expressed, “I was never in two minds. I always wanted an OTT release, but not so quickly after the theatre release.” The film is scheduled to premiere on SonyLIV on April 3, offering viewers who missed its theatrical run a chance to enjoy it online.

Additional Documentary Release

Sitaare Zameen Par will not only feature the main film but also include a documentary titled Sitaaron Ke Sitaare. This documentary highlights the parents of the neurodivergent actors involved in the film. Khan emphasized the importance of this additional content, describing it as a “very special piece.” He elaborated that the documentary celebrates the contributions of these parents, referring to them as the true superstars behind the young artists, who he believes have been instrumental in their upbringing and support.

Details on the Film’s Cast and Reception

The film stars Aamir Khan and Genelia Deshmukh, along with ten debutant neurodivergent actors, including Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishnan Varma, and Vedant Sharma, among others. Sitaare Zameen Par is considered a spiritual sequel to the acclaimed 2007 film Taare Zameen Par. Following its release, the film has been well-received at the box office, achieving a total of Rs 265 crore in worldwide earnings. Its performance has positioned it among the highest-grossing films of the previous year.

Strategic Release Approach

This dual release strategy aligns with Aamir Khan’s intentions to extend the film’s reach while acknowledging the value of theatrical experiences. By offering the movie on an OTT platform following its cinema run, the approach facilitates access for fans who did not have the opportunity to view it in theaters. The availability on SonyLIV from April 3 marks a significant moment for audiences eager to experience the film from the comfort of their homes.

Event Highlights

Khan made these remarks at the red carpet event during the International Film Festival Delhi (IFFD), further highlighting the film’s significance and the cultural dialogue it fosters surrounding neurodivergence and representation in cinema. The reception of both the film and the accompanying documentary underscores a growing awareness and appreciation for diverse narratives within Indian filmmaking.
