The situation in Puri, Odisha has been classified as a ‘red zone’ due to predictions of heavy rainfall. On September 24, 2026, local authorities raised an alert concerning the impact of a deep depression that has resulted in severe disruptions across regional weather patterns and marine conditions.

In light of the increased risk, particularly with regards to rough sea conditions, the district administration has advised tourists against bathing in the sea. Red flags have been hoisted along the coastline to inform visitors of the dangers. In response, lifeguards have been stationed in various sectors of the beach to monitor safety.

Assistant Station Officer Ananta Prasad Biswal provided insights into the gravity of the situation, stating that hazardous conditions are likely to worsen in the coming days. He emphasised the potential dangers posed by high waves and turbulent waters, warning that “anything could happen at any moment.”

Official Ban Imposed on Sea Bathing

The district administration has imposed a strict ban on bathing in the sea as a precautionary measure. Biswal highlighted that red flags have been raised, and lifeguards are actively issuing warnings to ensure that tourists remain safe during this critical period.

To enhance safety measures, the local government has deployed 98 lifeguards from the Odisha Fire Service, equipped with all necessary resources, including ATV bikes and megaphones. An appeal has been made to the public to refrain from entering the water for the next two days.

In coordination with the Fire Services Department, officials have advised lifeguards to be vigilant and prevent any tourist from entering the dangerous waters. The focus of the local authorities is particularly aimed at preventing incidents of drowning.

Fishermen Advised to Stay Ashore

As caution prevails, leave for all officers and employees within the district has been cancelled to ensure preparedness for any emergencies. Fishermen who had previously ventured out to sea for fishing activities have been instructed to return to the coast, thereby prioritising safety amid the rough sea conditions.

Officials from the Fisheries Department have directed fishermen to secure their boats, nets, and equipment. This advisory is essential to maintain safety and prevent any accidents that may arise due to the prevailing conditions.

Additionally, similar weather alerts are affecting areas beyond Puri. In Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, mechanised boat fishermen have also remained on land for the third consecutive day in response to warnings regarding severe winds and turbulent conditions over the Bay of Bengal.
