The IPL 2027 players’ auction will take place in Goa this December, marking a significant return of the event to Indian soil after being hosted overseas for the previous three years. The announcement was made by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia on Wednesday. The last three editions of the auction were conducted in Dubai, Jeddah, and Abu Dhabi.

The 2025 auction was held in Jeddah, while the preceding events were held in Dubai in 2024 and Abu Dhabi in 2026. Saikia confirmed to ANI that Goa would host this year’s auction, expressing enthusiasm to bring the event back home.

IPL chairman Arun Dhumal noted that efforts had been made to return the auction to India earlier, but challenges in securing a suitable venue during the wedding season had hindered those plans. Dhumal stated that with this year’s auction expected to be smaller, he was hopeful that a venue could be confirmed.

Concerns Surrounding the Impact Player Rule

In conjunction with the auction announcement, the BCCI is actively seeking feedback from IPL franchises regarding the Impact Player rule. This rule allows teams to make strategic substitutions during matches and is currently set to remain in effect until 2027. At a recent Governing Council meeting, the rule was a topic of discussion.

Prominent players, including India’s ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill, former captain Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel, have voiced their concerns regarding the rule. The consensus among these players is that the rule diminishes the relevance of traditional all-rounders in the game.

These concerns were echoed prior to the 2026 IPL season, with several team captains expressing their reservations to the BCCI. Growing voices for the rule’s reconsideration have prompted a review process, and Dhumal mentioned that the BCCI remains open to potential changes following discussions with all involved parties.
