Nine people were killed after a passenger bus caught fire on the Yamuna Expressway in Greater Noida on Thursday, with authorities saying the victims died from burns and suffocation. The incident occurred near the 33-kilometre milestone under the Jewar police station area.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of those who died in the incident. The government will also provide Rs 50,000 each to passengers who sustained injuries in the accident.

Rescue Teams Evacuate Passengers

According to Pradeep Kumar, Chief Fire Officer, the bus bearing registration number BR32PA8647 was travelling from Kashmiri Gate in New Delhi towards Mahoba when the fire broke out.

Emergency services were alerted following the incident, prompting senior police officials, local police personnel, rescue teams and four fire service units to reach the location. Firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control while rescue personnel evacuated passengers from the vehicle.

Kumar said rescue teams managed to safely pull out around 20 to 25 people from the burning bus. Fire personnel subsequently conducted a detailed search inside the vehicle to determine whether anyone remained trapped.

Nine Passengers Die In Blaze

After entering the bus, rescue personnel found that nine passengers had died. Kumar said the victims suffered fatal burns and suffocation as the fire spread through the vehicle.

Police from Jewar police station have begun efforts to establish the identities of the deceased. Authorities are also working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and contact the families of those who lost their lives.

The deaths have prompted further investigation into how the fire began and why it spread so rapidly inside the passenger vehicle. Officials are examining the bus and gathering information from survivors and others present at the scene.

Driver And Conductor Detained

Police have registered a case under relevant sections of law in connection with the incident. The driver and conductor of the bus have been taken into custody as part of the investigation, officials said.

Legal proceedings are underway, with authorities examining the circumstances that led to the fire and assessing whether any negligence or other factors contributed to the tragedy.

Preliminary findings indicate that the fire may have started following a spark or blast in the vehicle’s air-conditioning system. Investigators suspect that the incident could have ignited lubricating oil in the engine, allowing the flames to spread quickly through the bus.

The exact cause of the fire, however, will be established through the ongoing investigation. Police and other authorities are continuing to collect evidence while efforts to identify the deceased and assist the injured remain underway.
