Tennis Player Parikshit Somani Receives Four-Year Ban Due To Doping Violation

The CSR Journal Magazine

Indian tennis player Parikshit Somani has been given a four-year ban after his positive test for the banned substance trimetazidine during an ATP Challenger event held in Astana, Kazakhstan, on July 31, 2025. The 26-year-old athlete, who attained a career-high doubles ranking of No. 256, provided a urine sample that subsequently tested positive for this substance, which is on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s Prohibited List at all times. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced the suspension on September 23, 2026.

Duration and Consequences of the Suspension

Somani faced a provisional suspension starting from September 23, 2025. The four-year period of ineligibility is set to continue until September 2029. In addition to the ban, the tribunal has also annulled his results from the Astana event and any results obtained until his provisional suspension date. This decision entails the forfeiture of ranking points, prize money, and various associated achievements accrued during that timeframe.

Upon being provisionally suspended, Somani sought assistance from the ITIA’s player support programme in late 2025 to explore potential sources of contamination that could have contributed to the positive test. Testing was conducted on several items identified by him, including food products, which all returned negative results for trimetazidine at a laboratory accredited by WADA located in Salt Lake City, USA.

In February 2026, he put forth a claim regarding food contamination as a defence, which formed the crux of his argument during a hearing before an independent tribunal on August 19, 2026. Despite his efforts, the tribunal determined that Somani failed to satisfactorily demonstrate that the substance found in his sample originated from contamination, concluding that his theories were scientifically implausible and lacking in credibility.

Tribunal’s Findings on Defence Arguments

During the hearings, expert scientific opinions were presented by both Parikshit Somani and the ITIA. The tribunal assessed both parties’ arguments before arriving at its conclusion, which ultimately dismissed Somani’s proposed mechanisms of contamination. It reinforced the notion that the player did not establish a valid source for the prohibited substance within his system, which was pivotal in their finding.

The tribunal’s decision signifies a strict adherence to anti-doping regulations, reinforcing the importance of compliance among athletes. With the mandatory four-year ban imposed, Somani will not be eligible to compete in professional tennis until the penalty period elapses. The ITIA highlighted the significance of maintaining integrity within the sport and their commitment to upholding anti-doping policies.

This outcome serves as a cautionary tale within the athletics community regarding the implications of doping violations. The stringent measures underscore the heightened focus on clean sport and the responsibilities athletes bear in ensuring compliance with established regulations. Parikshit Somani’s case represents a notable incident in the continuing efforts of sports authorities to combat doping effectively.
