Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has expressed his congratulations to the team behind the Garhwali film ‘Dholi’, which won the Best Garhwali Feature Film award at the 72nd National Film Awards. He highlighted this achievement as a significant recognition of the rich folk language and culture of Uttarakhand.

CM Dhami articulated that this was a historic moment as it marked the first time a film in the Garhwali dialect had been awarded a National Film Award. He asserted that such accomplishments contribute to giving a new identity to Garhwali culture across the country.

In his message on social media platform X, he extended heartfelt congratulations to the entire ‘Dholi’ team, affirming that their recognition would enhance the visibility of Garhwali language and traditions throughout India.

Support for Regional Filmmaking

During his address, the Chief Minister noted the ongoing efforts within Uttarakhand to promote filmmaking in regional languages and dialects. He asserted that the success of ‘Dholi’ is expected to inspire young filmmakers and artists in the state.

Dhami remarked that creating films based on local roots is essential for cultural preservation, and he envisions that the achievement of ‘Dholi’ will motivate emerging talent to share more narratives from their heritage.

He stressed the importance of supporting productions in regional languages as they play a crucial role in maintaining and promoting local traditions and stories. The government is reportedly committed to nurturing this aspect of the film industry to foster greater representation of regional cultures.

Highlights from the 72nd National Film Awards

The National Film Awards ceremony this year also honoured several notable personalities in the film industry. Veteran actor Anant Nag received the esteemed Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his contributions to Indian cinema.

Randeep Hooda earned the Best Debut Film of a Director award for his film ‘Swatantrya Veer Savarkar’. Additionally, Yami Gautam was awarded Best Actor for her performance in ‘Article 370’, while Kartik Aaryan received the same accolade for ‘Chandu Champion’.

Mammootty achieved his fourth National Film Award for his performance in ‘Bramayugam’, and Rajkumar Periasamy was recognised as Best Director for the film ‘Amaran’. The award for Best Feature Film went to ‘Article 370’, while ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ was acknowledged as Best Feature Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.

Other highlights included Srikanth being awarded Best Hindi Film, with ‘Raayan’ recognised as Best Tamil Film and ‘Feminichi Fathima’ as Best Malayalam Film. ‘Committee Kurrollu’ was awarded Best Telugu Film in a ceremony that celebrates the vast landscape of Indian cinema.

Taking place in Gujarat this year, the 72nd National Film Awards were held at Kevadia, prominent for the statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Established in 1954, these awards stand as one of the most prestigious acknowledgments of excellence in Indian cinema, reflecting a wide range of filmmaking across different languages and regions.
