Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently held a virtual interaction with participants of the Seva Yatra, focusing on community outreach, traditional conservation practices, and travel plans. During this session, a participant shared insights from Jalore, where local children displayed excitement for environmental initiatives after observing a tree-planting event at a Sewa Vatika, or service garden.

The children expressed their commitment to nurturing the saplings every Sunday, demonstrating the transmission of service-oriented values to the next generation. One participant recounted, “While we were planting trees, local children approached us and said they wanted to be involved in similar initiatives. They promised to return weekly to care for the Sewa Vatika.” This reflects how such service activities engage young minds and instill a sense of responsibility.

Traditional Tree Watering Technique Suggested

In response to the community’s enthusiasm, Prime Minister Modi recommended an indigenous method for effective tree planting, particularly beneficial for arid areas like Rajasthan. He proposed placing a porous earthen pot, known locally as a ghada, adjacent to newly planted saplings to facilitate sustainable watering. He explained the simplicity and effectiveness of this technique, stating, “When a sapling is planted, placing an earthen pot next to it ensures water reaches its roots over time. This method helps trees grow more quickly and conservatively uses water.” Modi encouraged participants to share this practice, specifically in water-scarce regions.

Modi was keen to clarify the correct usage of these pots, advising against drilling holes, which can compromise the pot’s efficacy. He reiterated that water will seep naturally through the terracotta material, nourishing the plant. “An old pot can be repurposed for this purpose, provided it remains intact,” he added.

The Prime Minister’s suggestions aim to optimise water resources while fostering community involvement in environmental conservation.

Seva Yatra’s Journey and Community Engagement

The Seva Yatra participants, undertaking a motorbike journey, have been travelling in ten groups from Vadnagar to Varanasi since September 17, with plans to conclude the trip on October 7. This initiative highlights community service and engagement across various localities, aiming to involve youth and facilitate social welfare through a series of activities.

Throughout their journey, the Yatris are not merely passing through areas; they are actively interacting with community members to identify local needs. These activities include cleanliness drives at public places, youth discussions, and tree plantation efforts under the campaign ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam,’ which promotes tree planting in memory of mothers. This hands-on approach aims to foster a deep-rooted connection between service and community support.

Modi also invited participants to explore Varanasi, highlighting the city’s rich cultural heritage and culinary diversity. He provided a light-hearted reminder on the importance of moderation during their travels, acknowledging the appealing food options available in the city.

The Seva Yatra aims to reinforce the values of service and community, empowering individuals and enhancing public engagement across towns and villages. By weaving traditional practices with modern-day service initiatives, this journey not only nurtures environmental consciousness but also strengthens community ties. Such efforts reflect a broader vision for sustainable development and collective welfare as articulated by the Prime Minister and the participants of the Seva Yatra.
