Apple Explores Screenless Health Tracker As Wearable Fitness Market Grows

The CSR Journal Magazine

Apple is reportedly working on a new health and fitness wearable without a display, expanding its product portfolio beyond the Apple Watch. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company has been exploring a simpler device designed primarily for health and fitness tracking, similar to products from Whoop and Google’s Fitbit.

Apple has reportedly developed prototypes of the device and has been working on the project for several months. However, the company has not yet made a final decision on whether to launch it. If development proceeds as planned, Apple could introduce its first screenless fitness wearable before 2028, with 2028 anticipated as a possible launch year.

What Apple’s Screenless Fitness Tracker Could Look Like

The prototypes are reportedly built around a thin fabric band with a sensor-equipped computing module that sits on the wrist. Unlike the Apple Watch, the device would not feature a screen and would instead focus on collecting and tracking health and fitness data.

The project is still considered to be in its early stages. However, it reportedly has the backing of senior Apple executives, including executive chairman Tim Cook and services chief Eddy Cue, who is now leading the company’s health efforts.

The proposed device would mark a departure from Apple’s smartwatch model, which combines health and fitness features with apps, notifications and other smartphone-like functions. The new wearable would instead offer a more focused tracking experience without a display.

Why Apple Is Exploring A Screenless Wearable

Screenless health and fitness devices have gained popularity as consumers increasingly use wearables primarily to monitor health metrics rather than access apps and notifications.

Companies including Google, Whoop and Oura have established sizeable user bases with products centred on health tracking. Garmin also offers fitness trackers without displays.

Apple is reportedly looking to enter this segment while bringing some of the health and fitness capabilities available on its smartwatch to a simpler wearable. The latest Apple Watch models already offer advanced heart-rate tracking, readiness-style measurements and estimates of biological age based on health data.

The company is also testing a redesigned Health app in iOS 27.2, featuring a simpler interface and clearer guidance. According to the report, Cue is pushing Apple’s health team to make its products easier to use and place greater emphasis on health and fitness tracking.

Apple Expands Its Wearable Plans

The screenless fitness tracker is reportedly one of several wearable products Apple is developing. The company is also working on smart glasses and AirPods with cameras, both of which are targeted for 2027.

Apple has previously worked on an AI pendant equipped with a camera, although development of that project has been postponed.

Earlier this month, Apple also refreshed its Watch line with a feature that can record audio during the day and use AI to generate summaries of conversations and activities.

Apple is separately reported to be preparing a broader redesign of its smartwatch line-up as early as late 2027. The potential screenless fitness tracker would add another category to the company’s growing health and wearable portfolio, although its eventual launch remains unconfirmed.
