Ajit Agarkar’s term as chairman of the senior men’s selection committee will officially conclude on October 4. According to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, this decision comes as Agarkar has expressed his intent not to extend his contract. The former all-rounder communicated his decision to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on September 18, prompting the board to begin preparations for selecting his successor.

Agarkar assumed his role in July 2023, succeeding Chetan Sharma. His time in office has been marked by notable achievements, including India’s victory at the T20 World Cup in 2024 and the Champions Trophy in 2025. As his term approaches its conclusion, the BCCI will replace him with a new chairman to lead the selection committee.

Saikia has confirmed that the board is not in haste to announce the new chief selector, noting they will take the necessary time to make a decision following the end of Agarkar’s tenure. “We have sufficient time till October 4. Once we reach that date, we will announce our decision regarding the vacant position,” he stated.

“The women’s team has done exceptionally well and has maintained a winning streak for over a year,” Saikia remarked. He conveyed optimism that the men’s team would follow in their footsteps, presenting another opportunity for national pride when they compete in the Asian Games.

“As we approach the finals, we hope the men’s team will also create a moment of joy for the country, just as the women’s team has done,” he stated confidently. The anticipation around the men’s team’s prospects is building as they prepare for their matches in Indonesia.
