He stated that avoiding interactions at such levels would be “irresponsible,” advocating for maintaining open lines of communication.

In the lead-up to the visit, Trump publicly expressed a desire to impress Xi, mentioning his new helicopter landing pad’s readiness for the occasion. The welcome aimed to replicate the ceremonial treatment Trump received during his visit to China, wherein he was greeted with a red carpet and a military honour guard. However, Xi had not personally welcomed Trump at the airport during that trip.

Itinerary of Xi’s Visit

The agenda for the visit includes a formal arrival ceremony at the White House along with a review of military troops. A black-tie state dinner will also take place, with notable figures from the technology sector, including Nvidia’s Jensen Huang and SpaceX’s Elon Musk, expected to be in attendance. Prior to the dinner, closed-door discussions between the two leaders are planned, addressing key topics influencing US-China relations.

On Friday, Xi and Peng will return to the White House for a private tea with Trump and Melania Trump. This gathering will precede a visit to the National Archives in Washington, where the couples will view historic documents that underscore the ties between the two countries.
