West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari marked a significant advancement in the state’s Fire and Emergency Services by inaugurating 226 contemporary firefighting vehicles and equipment on September 23, 2026. The ceremony took place at Red Road in Kolkata and was attended by several key officials, including the Minister of State for the Department of Fire & Emergency Services and the Director General of West Bengal Fire & Emergency Services, as well as the Additional Chief Secretary of the same department.

Details of the New Fleet

The newly launched fleet consists of a diverse array of vehicles aimed at enhancing the state’s emergency response capabilities. Specifically, it includes 198 mid-size water tenders with a capacity of 2.5 kilolitres, 25 larger water tenders with a capacity of 6 kilolitres, and three articulating water towers that are 36 metres tall. The total investment for this procurement amounts to Rs 94 crore. These vehicles will be stationed at various fire stations, predominantly located in densely populated urban areas, industrial zones, and major market districts.

This acquisition is part of a comprehensive strategy to upgrade the Fire and Emergency Response System within West Bengal. The government aims to incorporate advanced technological solutions such as firefighting robots, drones, hydraulic platforms, and sophisticated communication systems in its operations. In addition to the current fleet, further procurement of modern firefighting and emergency-response equipment is planned for the future.

In conjunction with vehicle upgrades, the state is also focused on reinforcing its fire service infrastructure. Currently, 23 new fire stations are under development, and ten additional fire stations have been announced within the latest state budget. This expansion seeks to ensure that firefighting services are accessible and effective in responding to emergencies across the state.

Enhancements in Personnel and Training

The West Bengal government is actively working to strengthen the manpower of its fire services. A recruitment initiative is underway to fill 1,400 positions, which include roles such as Fire Operators, Fire Engine Operator-cum-Drivers, and Sub-Officers. Additionally, there are plans to create 2,500 new posts to further bolster the workforce dedicated to fire and emergency services.

The welfare of fire service personnel is also a priority for the government. Plans include an allowance equivalent to 26 days’ pay annually for personnel in permanent frontline positions. Furthermore, contractual Auxiliary Fire Operators will receive an additional monthly allowance of Rs 2,000. Modern housing facilities and barracks for fire personnel in Kolkata are also set to be developed.

In terms of disaster preparedness and public safety, the government is placing an emphasis on fire prevention and safety awareness. This will involve regular fire safety audits, inspections, mock drills, and ongoing training for personnel. The overarching aim is to create a fast, efficient, and technology-driven Fire and Emergency Service, capable of promptly responding to emergencies, thereby saving lives and reducing potential losses across West Bengal.
