The United States has officially invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to participate in the G20 Summit scheduled for December in Miami. This announcement was made by Secretary of State Marco Rubio following his discussions with Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during the UN General Assembly.

Rubio expressed that this summit presents an opportunity for President Putin to connect not only with US President Donald Trump but also with other global leaders. Rubio highlighted that the invitation aims to foster potential dialogue surrounding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has persisted for five years.

Specifically, he underscored that Trump is amenable to engaging with Putin and that the G20 gathering could serve as a suitable platform for a potential meeting between the two leaders. The Secretary of State articulated that the expectation is for Putin to accept the invitation and partake in the discussions.

Potential Meeting Between Trump and Putin

During the press briefing, Rubio was questioned about the possibility of Trump meeting Putin to discuss the Ukraine crisis. He responded affirmatively, stating that Trump is open to discussions with all world leaders, including those he holds opposing views with. Rubio noted their history of communication, indicating that Trump and Putin have held numerous conversations since Trump’s inauguration, suggesting there have been around a dozen interactions.

He acknowledged that while an ideal meeting would yield tangible results, the mere presence of Putin at the G20 in December would create an avenue for dialogue and interaction between the two leaders. Notably, former US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley deemed the invitation “irresponsible.” In her remarks shared on social media, she emphasised Putin’s aggressive actions in Ukraine and his support for Iranian forces as a threat to US interests and those of NATO allies.
