The UK has dispatched a Rapid Deployment Team to Nepal to assist 33 British nationals impacted by severe flooding in the region. This initiative has been taken as families in the UK express concerns and continue to seek information regarding their missing loved ones. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) confirmed that the team will start operations in Kathmandu from Saturday, where it will provide on-the-ground support for British citizens arriving at and departing from the airport.

This deployment is part of a broader UK response that includes a commitment of £5 million in humanitarian support aimed at relief and recovery efforts in Nepal. The flooding, which began on Wednesday, was exacerbated by an ice-rock avalanche following a glacial collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border, resulting in water, mud, and debris rushing downstream through central Nepal. This catastrophe led to extensive destruction of communities, vital infrastructure, and hydropower stations.

As of Saturday, the situation has worsened, with the death toll exceeding 600, while more than 2,400 individuals remain missing. Rescue operations have evacuated nearly 2,500 people, including 163 foreign nationals, as teams work tirelessly in the face of ongoing rainfall. Over 11,000 personnel, including more than 5,000 from the Nepal Army, have been mobilised to aid in these search and rescue efforts.

Role of UK Foreign Office and Consular Support

The UK’s crisis response staff are set to enhance consular services, coordinate with local authorities, and assist families seeking updates on missing relatives. UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband expressed that the scenes from Nepal are tragic and emphasised the prioritisation of the safety and welfare of British citizens. He noted that the Rapid Deployment Team’s purpose is to provide necessary support during this challenging time.

In addition to the team’s deployment, the UK Foreign Office is working closely with the Nepali authorities, emergency responders, and the British Embassy in Kathmandu to ensure that those affected can access vital assistance and information. The FCDO reiterated its commitment to helping any British nationals in Nepal requiring consular support, urging them to reach out to the British Embassy or contact the UK helpline.

Families of the affected individuals remain in distress, continuing their appeals for information about their loved ones. Among those caught in the disaster are British Indians from the South London Sanatan Mandir and Community Centre, who were participating in a pilgrimage tour to Kailash Mansarovar. Centre manager Sachin Bagla confirmed that they are fervently praying for the safety of their relatives and others impacted by the floods.

Wider Humanitarian Response by the UK Government

The FCDO explained that the latest deployment is part of a comprehensive response alongside the £5 million already committed. This aid is directed towards supporting Nepal’s governmental efforts through partnerships with the United Nations, the Red Cross, and non-governmental organisations. Additionally, the Foreign Office stated that the scale and complexity of the situation necessitated the incorporation of further humanitarian expertise.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced on Thursday that immediate UK efforts had begun by deploying consular staff to the affected regions to offer continuous support for British nationals. The UK’s coordinated response encompasses consular assistance, emergency personnel deployment, and humanitarian funding, continuing as search, rescue, and relief operations take place in flood-affected areas of Nepal.

The situation remains dire as rescue operations are underway and the full scale of the disaster continues to unfold. The UK government is dedicated to providing ongoing assistance and support to those impacted by this devastating event.
