The recent series against Sri Lanka has shone a light on India’s resurgence against spin bowling, an area that had previously caused considerable concern. This unease became particularly evident during India’s whitewashes against New Zealand and South Africa, where batters failed to counter spin effectively, leading to notably low averages.

Particularly alarming was New Zealand’s full series victory in 2024, which showcased a batting order lacking fluency against spinners. The Indian team recorded a disappointing average of 15.23 against South African bowling a year later, allowing bowlers like Simon Harmer to dominate. Understanding the need for a renewed technique against spin was critical for India’s strategy moving forward.

Historically, Indian Test cricket saw batting against spin as a fundamental skill. Players delivered solid performances using appropriate tactics, such as playing late and utilising footwork effectively. However, the recent performances indicated a decline in these techniques, prompting the need for collective rebuilding rather than merely substituting players.

Positive Signs from the Sri Lanka Tests

While the Sri Lanka series did not resolve all concerns, it provided a much-needed sense of structure to the Indian batting line-up. Notably, Devdutt Padikkal emerged as a pivotal figure, filling the No. 3 position with stability, a position that had been overlooked for some time. Padikkal’s impressive tally of 328 runs at an average of 109.33, including a noteworthy 167 in Galle and 117 in Colombo, showcased his potential as a key player.

Other contributors in the team included Dhruv Jurel with 173 runs, Rishabh Pant’s 168, and KL Rahul with 135. Despite less dominant performances by Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, India managed considerable team totals of 462 and 503 for 9 across the two Tests, highlighting an overall improvement.

The significance of these achievements went beyond mere statistics. For the first time in recent memory, India demonstrated that multiple players could effectively handle pressure during innings. This collaborative effort was evident when Jurel and Pant successfully stabilised the batting in the second Test match after a challenging phase, which to marked India’s capability to extend innings collectively.

Strategic Preparation of Devdutt Padikkal

What set Padikkal apart from his peers was not just his scoring ability but the thorough preparation he underwent prior to the series. His maiden century in Galle was a result of extensive training, where batting coach Sitanshu Kotak focused on developing a back-foot game suitable for handling spin effectively. This deliberate practice paid off as Padikkal displayed excellent footwork, allowing him to engage the bowlers effectively.

His ability to disrupt bowlers’ rhythm emerged as a standout quality. Instead of being passive, Padikkal attacked when opportunities arose, particularly against left-arm spinners. His two centuries were not only symbolic of individual skill but also reflected India’s capacity to manage innings with confidence. Padikkal commented on the importance of prior discussions within the team on strategies for batting against spin, indicating a cohesive effort to rebuild a methodical approach.

Future series will determine whether this improvement is sustainable. As India encounters tougher opponents and less favourable pitches, maintaining this newly established confidence against spin will be crucial. The performances during the Sri Lanka series indicate that the team might be poised for further developments, provided they stay united and committed to refining their game plan.
