The recent flooding in Nepal has resulted in remarkable survival stories, with the rescue of a 97-year-old woman emerging as a symbol of hope. The rescue team saved Guna Maya Bohara from the wreckage of her care home after a four-hour operation, and doctors report she is now recovering in hospital. Her story has resonated deeply with many, illustrating the resilience of the human spirit amidst catastrophe.

Reports indicate that Bohara’s great-nephew, Dipak, described her as resembling “a warrior” who has triumphed against overwhelming odds. This sentiment reflects the broader struggle faced by many individuals in the flood-devastated regions of Nepal, where numerous residents had to flee their homes. Many sought refuge on hillsides, enduring long nights stranded in forests while awaiting assistance.

Accounts of Other Survivors Emerge

Various individuals have shared their experiences of the natural disaster that struck on Wednesday morning. Raju Budhathoki, a customs agent based in Timure near the Nepal-Tibet border, recounted that the catastrophe began with a sudden shaking of the ground. Initially thinking it was an earthquake, he rushed outside to find that even police officers were escaping, confirming the magnitude of the situation.

Budhathoki managed to navigate a wire fence but injured his hand in the process. From his vantage point, he witnessed homes being swept away rapidly by the floodwaters. After fleeing to a nearby forest, he reflected on the events and remarked on the unexpected second chance he had been afforded. His account is one of countless narratives that underscore the collective trauma experienced by those in affected areas.

Another customs officer, Prakash Gautam, was equally fortunate. He described hearing a loud rumble before the market was engulfed by darkness and chaos. Despite injuring his toe during his escape, he made it to the safety of the forest, where he saw bodies floating in the water and observed the destruction of his home area. He and several others spent the night in the forest. The Nepali Army later airlifted them by a helicopter before bringing them to safety.

Survivors Face Long Road to Recovery

In Dolakha, Tulsi Bahadur Bhandari’s survival story adds to the growing list of accounts. As he attempted to escape, he was struck by the flood and propelled towards a hillside, a chance move that ultimately saved his life. In his own words, he stated that without this forceful push, he would not have survived the disaster. His survival, like those of others affected, illustrates the arbitrary nature of fate during such emergencies.

Another survivor, 33-year-old Sachin Khati, faced a harrowing experience when he rushed back to his uncle’s home only to find it in rubble. His family members remain unaccounted for, highlighting the devastating impact of the floods on local communities. The uncertainty surrounding their fate adds a layer of distress to the already significant loss endured by so many.

Additionally, Sujal Thapa, a 21-year-old labourer, was rescued from Uttargaya village after being swept away while asleep. His injuries were significant, and he remains in recovery, hoping for news of his family. As search and rescue operations persist, these survivor accounts underscore the scale of the national tragedy, with many families still separated and over 2,400 individuals reportedly missing in the aftermath of the floods.
