Carlos Alcaraz is set to return to competitive tennis at the US Open after a four-month injury break. The Spanish player sustained a right wrist injury that kept him from participating in both the French Open and Wimbledon earlier this season. As he gears up for his Grand Slam title defence, the 23-year-old is determined to showcase his typical high-level performance. “You’re going to see Carlitos playing the way he always has,” Alcaraz stated when asked about his readiness for the tournament.

His first match since the injury is scheduled for Monday, and despite the long hiatus, Alcaraz is confident in his physical condition and gameplay. He indicated that his training and playing mechanics have not been altered during his recovery period. “I need competition,” he reiterated, emphasising that both he and his coaching team believe he is prepared for the challenges ahead.

Defending Champion Faces New Challenges

Alcaraz arrives in New York amid high expectations, having secured his position as the defending champion after defeating Jannik Sinner in last year’s final. His victory also propelled him to the world No. 1 ranking, a spot he now holds as he enters this year’s tournament. However, Alcaraz’s main rival from last year, Sinner, has withdrawn due to a right knee injury, leaving Alcaraz to navigate the competition without his closest contender.

The change in dynamics feels peculiar to Alcaraz, who remarked on the situation by saying, “We are not going to see each other for, like, six months now, seven months.” The absence of Sinner has allowed Alexander Zverev to take over as the top seed in the competition.

However, the focus remains on Alcaraz, who has already had a notable season following his triumph at the Australian Open. Frances Tiafoe, seeded 11th, noted that Alcaraz’s return is anticipated to be one of the tournament’s key highlights. “Everyone is going to be pretty tapped in to see his first match,” Tiafoe said, affirming the excitement surrounding Alcaraz’s comeback.

Focus on Recovery and Performance

Alcaraz is set to commence his title defence against Roman Safiullin, facing the immediate challenge of best-of-five-set matches. In preparation, he participated in mixed doubles with Serena Williams, gaining valuable court time and adapting to the match environment in New York. Despite this, Alcaraz recognised the challenges of jumping straight into a Grand Slam following a significant layoff, stating, “It’s really challenging; probably in terms of preparation and everything, it is not the best time.”

Despite the challenges he faces, Alcaraz views the US Open as the ideal platform for his return. He acknowledged that winning immediately after a lengthy injury absence is difficult, as demonstrated by past champions like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Nevertheless, Alcaraz is focused on assessing his physical response rather than imposing specific expectations on his results. “I don’t want to focus on a specific result,” he added, underlining his intention to concentrate on the process.

Alexander Zverev, who has also returned from a serious injury, expressed caution about drawing parallels between his experience and Alcaraz’s wrist issue. He anticipates that Alcaraz may exhibit some rust initially but firmly believes the Spaniard remains a strong contender.

As the tournament approaches, Alcaraz’s mental readiness is equally important as he works to overcome fears arising from his injury. His aim is to trust his training and approach the matches without trepidation. “I just have to go 100%,” he concluded, signalling his intent to compete at the highest level once again.
