A nine-year-old girl from Nalasopara West, a locality close to Mumbai, passed away due to rabies nearly five months following a dog bite incident. The victim, identified as Kashish Sahani, reportedly declined to receive the anti-rabies vaccination as she was frightened of the injection. At the time of her passing, she was a Class 4 student living with her parents and grandfather.

The unfortunate event occurred approximately five months prior when Kashish was walking with her grandfather. While attempting to feed biscuits to a neighborhood dog, she was bitten. After the incident, her grandfather sought medical attention; however, Kashish experienced significant anxiety regarding the injection and refused treatment. The wound appeared to heal the following day, leading the family to forgo further medical intervention.

Her health deteriorated dramatically four days before her death, marked by symptoms such as red eyes and general discomfort. Initially, Kashish was treated at a nearby medical facility. Later, she was moved to Kasturba Hospital in Mumbai for specialized care, where she succumbed on Sunday night.

Following the tragic occurrence, officials from the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation conducted a visit to the local area. Dr. Bhakti Chaudhary, a medical officer, stated that family members and children who were in close contact with Kashish would undergo screening as a precautionary measure. Health officials reiterated the critical importance of timely vaccination against rabies, emphasizing that the disease is preventable when proper medical steps are taken.

Authorities are urging parents to ensure that children do not conceal injuries due to fear and to seek immediate medical care in the event of any animal bite, rather than relying on home remedies. The incident has intensified concerns among local residents regarding the increasing population of stray dogs, prompting demands for enhanced actions from municipal authorities to address the situation effectively.
