The nomination process for the upcoming Assam Assembly Elections concluded with a total of 818 candidates filing 1,391 nomination papers across all 126 constituencies in Assam, according to official data released on Monday. Authorities clarified that the figures are provisional and subject to final compilation.

Nominations were filed across all Assembly segments in the state. The scrutiny of nomination papers is scheduled for March 24, while March 26 has been fixed as the last date for withdrawal of candidature, setting the stage for the final list of contestants.

Alongside the nomination process, the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer has intensified its outreach initiatives under the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation programme. The campaign aims to enhance voter turnout by spreading awareness about democratic rights and electoral responsibilities.

Special observer appointed

To ensure free and fair elections, the Election Commission of India has deputed Manjeet Singh (Retd.) as Special Observer. Officials stated that citizens and stakeholders can approach the observer between 11 am and 5 pm daily with complaints or concerns related to the electoral process.

District administrations have introduced locally themed mascots to strengthen grassroots engagement. These include ‘Bakhar’ in Lakhimpur, ‘Ganabandhu’ in Sonitpur, ‘Jolou’ in Jorhat, ‘Chameli’ in Golaghat, and ‘Dwimlu’ and ‘Sikhiri’ in Kokrajhar. The mascots are aimed at connecting with diverse voter groups, particularly in rural and semi-urban regions.

Public figures join awareness campaign

The outreach campaign has also enlisted public figures to widen its impact. Digital creator Abhinav Bora, popularly known as “LazyGuy,” has been named the district icon for Jorhat, while actor Rajiv Duwari is leading awareness initiatives in Lakhimpur.

State SVEEP Icon and para-cyclist Rakesh Banik has been touring multiple districts to promote voter participation, highlighting the poll panel’s emphasis on inclusivity, accessibility, and representation.

With preparations gaining momentum, the Election Commission of India continues its efforts to ensure an informed and participative electorate ahead of the polls.
