400 Abandoned Migrant Workers in Singapore Get Fast-Track Job Placements

The CSR Journal Magazine

The job placement initiative for over 400 migrant workers, primarily from India and Bangladesh, is set to commence next week in Singapore. This development is associated with an alleged case of abandonment involving three companies directed by an Indian-origin man, Ramu Palani Velu. Reports indicate that Velu has reportedly left the country following months of unpaid wages for the workers.

The workers had been engaged by SK Industries, KPA Engineering, and VVR Plant Engineering, which are under Velu’s leadership. According to local media reports, his whereabouts are currently unknown, exacerbating the situation for the employees who have been left without salaries for a duration of three to four months.

The circumstances led many of these workers to approach the Ministry of Manpower earlier this week to seek assistance. The workers have been struggling financially and were in need of urgent support due to their unpaid wages.

Organisations Involved in the Response

The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) stated on Friday, June 26, 2026, that interest has been expressed by over 80 companies, resulting in nearly 400 job vacancies for the affected workers. NTUC Secretary-General Ng Chee Meng highlighted this in a social media update, noting that additional referrals for job placements are being submitted by their unions.

In conjunction with this job placement initiative, NTUC plans to relocate the workers to a suitable lodging facility by the upcoming weekend. This effort is supported by the Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC), ensuring that the workers have proper accommodation while transitioning to new employment opportunities.

The Tripartite Alliance for Dispute Management (TADM) is actively present at Tuas View Dormitory, the current residence of the affected workers. TADM is a collaborative initiative involving the Ministry of Manpower, NTUC, and the Singapore National Employers Federation, dedicated to resolving workplace disputes amicably.

Support Provided to the Affected Workers

The announcement of job placements follows growing concerns highlighted by the workers, who reported their employer’s failure to compensate them as mandated. As many of these workers await new employment, both NTUC and MWC are committed to ensuring that they are not overlooked during this pivotal transition.

Ng Chee Meng reassured the workers of the organisation’s commitment, proclaiming that the process will ensure that “no one is left behind.” The ongoing efforts by these organisations reflect a concerted attempt to aid the migrant worker community during this challenging time.
